The Kentucky Autism Training Center (KATC) fulfills the legislative mandate to enhance outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by bridging research to practice. KATC provides training, resources, and support to families, educators, and service providers.

Kentucky Autism Training Center (KATC) • Fulfills the Kentucky legislative mandate to enhance outcomes for all Kentuckians with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – 13 KAR 2:080. State Autism Training Center • KATC’s mission is to strengthen our state's systems of support for persons affected by autism by bridging research to practice and by providing training and resources to families and professionals • KATC is committed to improving the quality of life for those affected by ASD
KATC Strategic Focus • Roles • Inform the systems of support • Build regional capacity • Facilitate networking • Empower families to access available resources • Develop evidence-based models for families teachers and schools • Collaborate with the KDE to develop training and technical assistance for schools • Beliefs • All with ASD have value, can contribute and are unique • Communities need to be prepared to embrace all individuals with autism • Goals • KATC will create, grow and maintain relationships with service systems and providers that serve those with ASD and families • KATC will develop materials and supports consistent with evidence-based practices for families, educators and service providers • KATC will provide direct training consistent with evidence-based practices to families, educators and service providers across the Commonwealth of Kentucky
Historic State Support of KATC • For 3 bienniums KATC received its state funds through the CPE as “pass through funds” • 2012-13 = $132,400 • 2013-14 = $132,400 • 2014-15 = $125,800 • 2015-16 = $125,800 • 2016-17 = $119,500 • 2017-18 = $119,500 • January 2018, 70 programs were identified to be eliminated during the state budget process – the KATC was one of the programs • A ground swell of support to protect the KATC funding • Funding was restored (and increased) to $150,000 for the 2018-20 Biennium. These funds are now included in UofL’s direct state appropriation. Thank you !!
Use of State Funds • In previous years, state funds have been used to support: • Partial support for staff salaries that develop and conduct the training • On-site training activities across the state (travel, lodging and site expenses) • Informational materials for parents and service providers • State conference participation fees (external fees) • Utilities for the KATC Facility • External speaker fees for national experts to train KY professionals and parents across the Commonwealth of Kentucky
Use of State Funds For FY 2018-19, the KATC will continue to utilize the state funding to cover the same types of expenditures as in the past … With the overarching goal of providing support to better the lives of those impacted by autism!

FY 2017-18 KATC Impact: Information Dissemination • Website – 41,684 visits • Newsletter – quarterly electronic distribution to 7,487 subscribers • Social Media: • Twitter – 286 followers • Facebook – 2,986 “likes” • YouTube Channel – 21,829 views, 661 subscribers, 159,908 watched (89 webinars are archived) • Amanda L. King Resource Library – materials on ASD, disability, education, parenting available for checkout – statewide distribution • Kentucky Autism Services and Supports Directory – 529 providers listed • KYAUTISM LISTSERV – 207 members (parents, community members, etc.)
FY 2017-18 KATC Impact: Statewide Training Sessions • Led nearly 200 statewide training sessions • Averaging 18 sessions per month (1 hour, 2-4 hours, full-day and multi-day) • Session topics included: • Autism interventions in the general classroom setting • Antecedent based interventions for instructional assistants • Autism services, resources, and more • Autism and first responders • Audiences included: • Public schools and school systems • Colleges and universities • Local police departments, emergency medical services, and fire departments • Professional associations (i.e. - KY Association of School Psychologists) • Direct ongoing consultation to 237 individuals and/or their families
FY 2017-18 KATC Impact: Coaching and Support Building statewide capacity for educators to improve outcomes for learners with ASD through partnership with Kentucky Department of Education, regional Special Education Cooperatives and local school districts • KATC collaborated with 9 Special Educational Cooperatives to provide intensive training and technical assistance for 7 district teams and 29 school teams • School and district personnel participate in comprehensive training regarding the implementation of evidence-based practices to teach students with autism • KATC Field Training Coordinators (FTC) are assigned to the schools within a specific region, provide the comprehensive trainings, visit each classroom a minimum of 1 time monthly, and provide ongoing technical assistance to the school staff
