MASTERY CHECK Question #1 Question #2 Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the following isotopes: 20Ne and Ne-22 Determine the number of protons and electrons in the following ions:Na+1 and O-2
ISOTOPES! Notes expectations: We are silent We are writing what is in red We only ask questions about content No bathroom
ISOTOPES Key Point #1: Two atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons are called isotopes. We can have more or less neutrons without changing what element we are talking about. Why?
ISOTOPES • Key Point #2: Having extra neutrons changes the mass of the element because MASS = #PROTONS + #NEUTRONS My # of protons never changes, but if my neutrons change, so will my mass!
ISOTOPES • Key Point #3: Isotope notation lets you know the mass of an element(in case it is different than usual). From there, we can figure out the # of neutrons for that isotope 16 7 OR Nitrogen - 16 Mass Element symbol N Mass Atomic number
ISOTOPES • Key Point #4: The periodic table shows the average massof the element in nature.
PRACTICE WITH HELP Question #1 Question #2 Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the following isotopes: 23Al and Ar-42 An element has 19 protons, 23 neutrons, and 19 electrons. What element is this?
IONS ARE EZ! • Key Point #5: An ion is an atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge • Remember when I said that we will assume all atoms are neutral unless told otherwise…NOW is that time!
What Does It Mean When I Have an Ion? • Key Point #6: When an atom is an anion (negative), it has extra electrons • This makes sense – having MORE negative parts will create a negative charge • Key Point #7: When an atom is a cation (positive), it has lost electrons • Same thing here – having LESS negative parts will create a positive charge
Practice • For example: • How many electrons would an atom of Fluorine normally have? • NINE! • If I had an ion of Fluorine that said F1- • Does this mean I have extra electrons? Or that I have lost electrons? • EXTRA! • So that means I have one extra electron, so how many will I have now? • TEN!
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE • Work on your worksheet independently and quietly • If you have a question you should: • Look back to your notes • Quietly ask a neighbor • Raise your hand to ask your teacher for help POUR yourself into your work!
