Israelites • The most influential of smaller Mid Eastern groups were the Jews, who developed the 1st clearly developed monotheistic religion. • The Jews, a Semitic people influenced by Babylonian civ, settled near the Mediterranean around 1200 B.C.E. • Their history of God’s guidance of the Jews formed the basis for the Hebrew Bible. • The Jewish religion and moral code persisted even as the Jewish state suffered domination by foreign rulers. • Jewish monotheism sustained Jewish culture to the present, and served as the basis for the development of Christianity and Islam. • No premium on converting non-Jews. • God linked to ethical conduct.

  8. Moses • Drought in Palestine caused many Hebrews to migrate to Egypt, where they were enslaved by pharaohs. • Here they remained in bondage until Moses led a mass exodus out of Egypt. • From there, they wandered back to Palestine.

Kings of Israel • 1st king of the Israelites was Saul (1020-1000 B.C.E.). • After his death, David reunited the Israelites, defeated the Philistines, and regained control over Palestine. • David made Jerusalem the capital, and unified the kingdom. • David’s son Solomon expanded trade and the kingdom itself. Israel reached its height of power under Solomon. • Kingdom of Israel declined after Solomon’s death, and the Jews fell to Babylonian captivity, and later the Persians.
