  3. Where? • Initially most evident in Northern Europe: UK, Sweden, Denmark, Norway • Now represented across Europe, notably in, e.g., Poland, Czech Republic

  4. Evidence? • Increasing number of public opinion polls across Europe

  5. Evidence? • Norway has declined to join EU • Switzerland has declined to join EU • Rejection of Constitution by France & Netherlands (2005) • Rejection of Treaty of Nice by Ireland (approved on subsequent vote) • Rejection of Treaty of Maastricht by Denmark (1992) (approved on subsequent vote)

  6. Issues? • Nation-specific, e.g. Norway and fishing industry • Economic: worries about underperformance of eurozone or rigidity of Growth and Stability Pact • Sovereignty/nationalism • “democratic deficit” • Suspicion of uncontrollable government • Opposition to unified foreign/military policy

  7. Evidence? • Swedish rejection of euro in national referendum on September 14, 2003 • Iceland has never applied for membership • Greenland, when given home rule by Denmark, opted out of the EEC (1979)
