Sample Paragraph Another cause for the fall of the Roman Empire was the severe economic depression caused by the inefficient government.According to John Harding, the fall of the empire “was the natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness” (Document #3). In other words, the Roman Empire was too big for the government to control. Some emperors, like Diocletian, tried to reform the empire by splitting into a western and an eastern half, but this did not work. The western half was ignored and continued to decay. As a result of economic and political problems, the Roman empire crumbled fundamentally changing western Europe.
