During the Inspection • New structure to key judgements • Involvement of Head/SLT at Inspector’s meeting • More lesson observation • Pupil, staff and parent questionnaires • More dialogue as tentative judgements emerge • Usual meetings with students, governors, staff emerge • Dialogue around wording of report

  4. After the Inspection • Usual drafting procedures • Report is shorter • Focus on clear targets for improvement

  8. The PIB & Pre-Meeting • 2 Styles • Initial judgement based on SEF • Agree – disagree – substantiate • You are invited to agree the areas of focus

  9. Key PointsDuring the Inspection • Greater involvement of Head / SLT • Sitting in on Inspector’s meeting

  10. Lesson Observations • Mostly 30 minutes, some full lessons, some 10 minutes • Paired observation Head/Inspector, Middle Manager/Inspector • Criteria on progress is very rigorous • Emphasis on groups, individuals under-achieving

  11. Ability to influence judgement as it emerges enhanced • Attending inspectors’ team meetings

  12. Wording of Report • Think marketing & challenge • Terse report

  13. Issues to consider • Preparation OLD SEF / NEW SEF • Time consuming • Start with Domino Game • Start with NEW and then go back to old for IMPACT • Use the OLD SEF as your document • Think carefully re Safeguarding, Community Cohesion

  15. Head & SLT Involvement • Use all opportunities to influence and instigate them (OLD SEF) • Concern – More influence = more responsibility • Attitude of Governors if disappointed – your fault?

  16. No Notice Inspections • In pilot meant telephone call pm – inspection next day • Spring Term, trialling phone call at 8.30am and in • Does it matter?

  17. Summary Advantages • More influence/dialogue • More subtle balances (the dominoes fall your way) • Less frequent (5/6 years?)

  18. Summary Concerns • The New SEF and the full story • Greater differentiation – the dominoes fall against you • The pivots – behaviour, safeguarding, equal opportunities and discrimination • The terse report • More frequent for some - live with previous poor report for longer for others
