Dangerous substances in Tobacco • Nicotine: drug that speeds up the heartbeat and CNS, it narrows blood vessels to and from the heart • Carbon Monoxide: poisonous, odorless gas (prevents RBC from carrying enough oxygen) • Tar: thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns
Health Risk • Over time tobacco use is linked to heart disease, lung disease, and cancer • Emphysema: the alveoli in the lungs loose their elasticity • Reduces the amount of oxygen that gets passed from the lungs into the blood • Addiction: the body’s physical or mental need for a drug • Begin to need the substance to function “normally”

Health Risk • Brain: can lead to addiction • Mouth, Teeth and Throat: bad breathe, stained teeth, weakens the enamel of the teeth, mouth and throat cancers • Lungs: coats the inside of the lungs and prevents them from working well and lung cancer. • Heart: increased heart rate and narrow blood vessels which makes the heart work harder, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes
Forms of Tobacco • Smoked Tobacco • Cigarettes • Cigars • Pipes • Bidis: hand-rolled flavored cigarettes • Smokeless Tobacco • Snuff: Finely ground tobacco that is inhaled or held in the mouth or cheeks • Dip: moistened version of snuff • Chew: not ground must manually be chewed to release the flavor and nicotine
Teens and Tobacco • According to the CDC and other similar organizations every day 4000 young people try their first cigarette • Reasons: • Smoking makes them look cool • (Truth: stains teeth, bad breathe & wrinkled skin) • Tobacco makes teens more accepted with peers • (Truth: 70-80% teens never try tobacco) • Using tobacco makes you more grown-up • (Truth: more adults are quitting) • Tobacco won’t hurt your health for years • (Truth: some effects begin the first time you use tobacco)
Negative Influences • Negative Peer Pressure: pressure you feel to go along with the harmful behaviors or beliefs or your peers • Friends and family use of tobacco • Media: newspaper, magazines, radio, tv and the internet • Few years ago study was done that showed • tobacco was used in more than ¾ of movies intended for young viewers • 1/3 of pop song glamorized tobacco use • Tobacco Advertising: • On average the tobacco industry spends $10 billion a year to advertise its products

Quitting • Cold Turkey Method: stopping the use of all tobacco products • Very difficult for most people • Nicotine Replacement Therapies: products used to help a person quit smoking • Gums, patches, e-cigarettes • Support Groups
Secondhand smoke • Secondhand smoke: mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of tobacco products and the smoke exhaled by smokers • Passive smokers: nonsmokers who breathe in secondhand smoke
