Evolution Makes Sense of Homologies Vestiges are parts of an organism that are no longer in use and are shrinking, like the pelvis on a whale. Pentadactyl limbs are found on tetropods and its supposed to have 5 digits. New functions evolve from pre-existing structures, which is how an animal would acquire a wing, like a bat.
