Zephyr & Dogtown Zephyr was a local surf shop in Santa Monica, California. The Z-boys were the Zephyr surf team, they would go down to Pacific Ocean Pier in the morning when the waves were best. Pacific Ocean Pier used to have an amusement park on top of it, but by the mid seventies was abandoned and an eyesore for Santa Monica.The Z-boys referred to it as Dogtown, a surf spot all their own.
Los Angeles drought During the mid 70’s their was a major drought in California putting water restrictions on all local communities. This forced home owners to drain their pools for quite some time, something that the Dogtown crew took advantage of. They would sneak into homeowners backyards when they were at work or on vacation to skate in their pools. Little did they know this would spark a style of skating that is still alive today. Bowl skating.
Skateboarding Today From pool skating in the seventies skateboarding has developed into one of the leading independent sports of today. With competitions being held every year such as the Maloof Money Cup, with winning purses leading up to $160,000. Numerous skateboard magazines, and thousands of skateshops worldwide.
