Title: Beautiful Creatures Authors: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl Date/Year pub. 2009 Genre: Fantasy Kelly Collings
Setting It is set in the small southern town of Gatlin in modern times. It is important to the story that it is in a small town because Lena and Ethan may have never met each other if they had been in a large city.
Characters Ethan- Physical Description- 6’2, long hair, blue eyes Adjectives-Caring- he is trying to help Lena even though he hardly knows her. Honest- He told Lena about the nightmares even though he was nervous about her reaction Smart- He is a straight A student Lena- Physical Characteristics- green eyes, black hair, curly hair. Adjectives- Mysterious- She's Old Man Ravenwoods niece. Shy- She didn’t want to hang out with anyone on her first day of school Powerful: She is a natural caster which is the most powerful type of caster
Conflict The conflict of the story is that Sarafine is trying to make Lena turn into a dark caster instead of a light caster and to do that Ethan has to die. The type of conflict is Man vs. Man
Summary Ethan is having nightmares about a girl that he has never met. Then Lena shows up and turns out to be a caster and the girl from Ethan's nightmares. Lena is worried that she is going to turn into a dark/evil caster because she thinks she has no control over it. They find out that Lena can control whether or not Lena turns dark but are still worried. But, Sarafine, who is Lena's mother is trying to get her to turn dark. Ethan and Lena search for the Book Of Moons in hopes that they will find a way that Lena will turn light for sure. On the night of her turning Sarafine shows up and tries to make Lena turn dark. To do so she tries to kill Ethan so that Lena will be so mad she will turn dark.
Theme • Work hard for something and you will probably achieve it. Examples from book- • Ethan found out what Lena was even though she didn’t want him to know. • Ethan and Lena found the Book Of Moons • Ethan and Lena defeated Sarafine.
Point of View The author tells the story in first person omniscient from Ethan's point of view. This is good for the story because it helps you understand Ethan's thoughts and feelings. If the author had chosen third person limited then you might not understand why Ethan did the things he did.
Symbolism • The symbolism in the story was the Book of Moons. It affects the story because it is the only way that Ethan and Lena will make sure that Lena turns light.
Recommendation • I think this book is definitely worth reading because the description is so good that, to me it felt like I was really there. Another thing is that I've always liked books with action and “Beautiful Creatures” has a lot of action.
