As a reader we are aware that the Latin and Greek languages are no longer primary languages used for conversation, this reinforces the sense of erosion... • Irish... Lancey cannot speak Irish – described as ‘humble’ – reveals Hugh’s feelings of superiority. Hugh, despite being multi lingual, is presented as naive... • English... The language of progress. The language will take over, wiping out the other languages. This loss of language will result in the loss of cultural identity. Language is the root of identity, society, community, culture, belonging.
