Life/Writing Career • Silverstein was an American poet, singer-songwriter, musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children’s books. • He was born in Chicago, and was writing by the time we was 12. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and went on to attend the Art Institute of Chicago. • He made cartoons in the military. Then he was introduced to an editor who said he should write for children. Many of his books were poems and drawings. • Shel Silverstein passed away on May 10, 1999 from a heart attack in Key West, Florida.
