marijuana Legalization By Carrie Parker
WASHINGTON State drug Laws • Possession of less than 40 g of weed results in 1-90 days incarceration and a fine of $250 • Possession of over 40 g is a felony and can result in 6 months-5 years incarceration • Cultivation, delivery, or sale is punishable by up to 5 years incarceration and a fine of up to $1000. • Sell to a minor at least three years younger than yourself and the sentence can double.
I-1068 • Sponsored by Sensible Washington • Would have made selling, producing, delivering, and using weed legal for all over 21 • Didn’t appear on the November 2nd ballot because there weren’t enough signatures.
pros • Weed is generally not as harmful as alcohol and tobacco • Would make the state money because it could be taxed • Would protect medical marijuana users • Would reduce amount spent on incarceration • Would free up police and court resources for malicious crimes
Cons • Weed is considered a gateway drug • On top of drunk drivers we would have stoned drivers too • Would be easier for kids to get it
The Future on Weed • Would strengthen our economy • There would be less conflict • More food would be bought • Use of other drugs may increase • Might cause health problems
