What is Stockholm syndrome It is basically when someone is taken captive and gains feelings for their captor
Origin • First occurred in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973. • After an accident in Stockholm, Sweden during which a bank employee romantically attached to a robber who held her hostage
Definition Stockholm syndrome- is a noun and a psychological condition in which hostages or kidnapped victims become sympathetic toward their captors
Causes Crisis situations Hostage takers remain in contact with hostages Hostages show kindness
Symptoms Showing admiration for the abductors Resisting rescue attempts Defending captors Trying to please abductors Refusal to testify against captors Refusal to run away from captors
Diagnosis Stockholm syndrome is when coping with a traumatic situation is almost imposable. Most psychiatrists would use the diagnostic criteria for acute stress disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder when evaluating a person with Stockholm syndrome. So basically the same way they treat post traumatic stress disorder.
Treatments There are not many treatments but the few are combinations of medication, and psychotherapy
