Mitsuru Iwaoka, Yokogawa Elec. Co. Abstract • This presentation describes an 802.11ah use case and • functional requirementsof following industrialuse cases, • Use case 1d: Sensors for industrial process automation • Use case 2a&2b:Backhaul Sensor/Meter data • required in 11th April 2011 teleconference [1][2].

Deployment of Sensors/Actuators in Typical Industrial Process Automation Use Cases • Up to 10,000 sensors/actuatorsin large (e.g. 2 by 1km) outdoor areawith rich specular metallic structures. Distance: typically <500m Relay (or Mesh) to extend coverage AP Use case 2a&2b; Backhaul Elevation of AP: 1~20m STA STA&AP AP Control Room Distance: typically <500m STA/AP capacity Elevation of STA: 1~20m Use case 1d; Sensors Sensor; non-11ah Backhaul: 11ah Sensor; 11ah Backhaul: 11ah Sensor; 11ah Backhaul: non-11ah Mitsuru Iwaoka, Yokogawa Elec. Mitsuru Iwaoka, Yokogawa Elec. Co. Long Distance Use cases in Industrial Process Automation • In pipeline monitoring or oil/gas upstream monitoring application, distance between AP/STA will be large (~2km). • Rural (open air) environment • AP/STA’s will be deployed carefully as following. • Place at LOS position each other • If necessary, use high gain antenna Case 1d; pipeline monitoring Case 2a&2b; Oil/gas upstream monitoring Hundreds of well are scattered in desert, or on the sea Distance between each well: ~2km Distance: ~2km <10 Sensors/well
Mitsuru Iwaoka, Yokogawa Elec. Co. Requirements of Industrial Process Automation Use Cases: Coverage • In typical case, distance between AP and STA is less than 500m • Multi-hop relay (or mesh) can be used to extend coverage. • Some exceptional cases (see Slide.5), distance up to 2km is required. • Rural (open air) environment • Path loss is much smaller than urban/sub urban area
Mitsuru Iwaoka, Yokogawa Elec. Co. Proposed functional requirement of Industrial Process AutomationUse Cases: Coverage • Distance between STA and AP is typically less than 500m. • PER is < 1% @500m (from high reliability requirement) • Outdoor with rich specular metallic structures, urban, or sub urban
