History of Acupuncture In Stone Age & Neolithic Fuxi was said to be the inventor of acupuncture. Sharpened stone known as bian shi was used to cure chronic afflictions. During Shang Dynasty Hieroglyphs and pictographs about acupuncture were found. During Han Dynasty Stone and bone needles were replaced with metal around 2nd century BC. Earliest written record of acupuncture found in huang di nei jingwas completed around 200BC. Antiquity

Between Han and Song Dynasty 90 works on acupuncture were written, and the Emperor Renzong of Song ordered the production of a bronze statue depicting the meridians and acupoints in 1023. Acupuncture spread outside China to nearby countries. After Song Dynasty Acupuncture lost status, and started to be seen as a technical profession. During Ming Dynasty Portuguese missionaries first brought acupuncture to the West in the 16th century. The first elaborate Western treatise on acupuncture was published in 1683 by a Dutch physician. In China it was still associated with lower classes and illiterate practioners During Qing Dynasty Emperor Daoguang banned the practice of acupuncture within the Empiral Academy of Medicine outright. The earliest report of acupuncture in USA was published in 1826 about the use of it on backache. And since the beginning of 19th century acupuncture was practiced by Asian emigrants in Chinatown. After the Chinese Civil War CCP leaders ridiculed TCM including acupuncture as superstitious and backward. But later Chairman Mao reversed this position, saying that TCM is a great treasure house. In 1971 The greatest exposure in the West came, after a New York Times reporter wrote about how acupuncture cured his post-operative pain. In 1972 Acupuncture gained attention in USA, as President Nixon visited China, and the first legal acupuncture centre in USA was established in Washington DC.
