About Bridgewater (source Wikipedia) Population 1980 Census: 29,1751990 Census: 32,5092000 Census: 42,940 • Bridgewater is a relatively large, mostly affluent suburban township located in the center of Somerset County. The thirty-three square mile area which is now the Township of Bridgewater was originally purchased from a local Lenape Native American tribe. Bridgewater was chartered by George II of Great Britain in 1749, and incorporated as one of New Jersey's 104 original townships in 1798. It is named after the town of Bridgewater in the English county of Somerset. • Tradition holds that it was at the Middlebrook encampment that the first official flag of the United States was unfurled, after a law to adopt a national flag had been passed by Congress on June 14, 1777. By special order of Congress, a Thirteen Star Flag is flown 24 hours a day at the Washington Camp Ground, part of the former Middlebrook encampment, in Bridgewater. Since 1889, the first hoisting of the flag is commemorated annually each July 4 with a changing of the flag, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and the delivery of an historical address. • Until recently, Bridgewater was known as a farming town. In the 1970s its population began to grow when residents of larger cities such as Plainfield and Newark started to migrate into Bridgewater. Subsequently, Bridgewater started to receive an influx of residents who worked in the strong pharmaceutical, telecommunications and financial industries in Bridgewater and the Raritan Valley. More recently, there has also been growth as Bridgewater has become more popular with New York City commuters who use Bridgewater Station on New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line or Interstate 78 East to commute to New York City. • Bridgewater is now a fairly developed suburban community, with few traces of its rural past still evident in the town (particularly in its northwestern section). Bridgewater is now Somerset County's second-most populous municipality, after Franklin Township.

Geography • According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 32.5 square miles (84.3 km²), of which, 32.5 square miles (84.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.28%) is water. • While much of Bridgewater has relatively flat terrain, the northeastern portion of the township is very hilly, with the First Ridge of the Watchung Mountains (sometimes known as the First Watchung Mountain) passing through the township. Additionally the Second Ridge (Second Mountain) passes just north of the township border (except where Somerville and Raritan were carved out as separate boroughs) and the North Branch of the Raritan River forms the township's western border with Branchburg. The North Branch and South Branch of the Raritan River meet at the extreme southwestern corner of Bridgewater at the border with both Branchburg Township and Hillsborough Township, and this point known as the Raritan River Confluence was once intended to be a major reservoir. • Bridgewater borders 13 other municipalities. Its longest borders are with Branchburg Township, Bedminster, Bernards Township, Warren Township, Bound Brook, Somerville and Raritan. It also borders Green Brook (though connected only by Route 22), Middlesex (though connected only by one local street), South Bound Brook (a very short border in the middle of the Raritan River, Franklin Township (the only street connection is Interstate 287), Manville (the only street connection is Finderne Avenue, a county highway), and Hillsborough (no direct street connection.) Zoning • The zoning enforcement office is located in the lower level of the municipal building. The office hours are from 12 - 5 PM. The office reviews construction application permits. It also issues utility shed (100 square feet or less) permits along with patio, fence, and gazebo permits. Questions regarding construction of additions, decks, and driveways should be referred to zoning, as well as questions on snow removal from sidewalks.Property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks. Snow may not be moved to a cleared public roadway due to public safety concerns. Please refer to Chapter 182, SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL of the municipal code for more information. • The zoning officer conducts field investigations. Land use and ordinance violations are two of the areas routinely brought to his attention. Complaints often include inoperable or unregistered vehicles. Complaints made by residents are recorded and investigated. Code – cont. HOW DO I APPLY FOR A PERMIT?The required documentation for a construction permit includes:- Permit application- Construction plans- Plot planAn application for permit is available from the Code Enforcement Department located in the Municipal Building. The office hours are Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. Along with the completed application, the applicant must submit two (2) copies of the construction plans. These drawings may be done by the applicant for his own single-family dwelling or by a New Jersey licensed architect or engineer. A building contractor is not permitted to do the drawings unless he is licensed by the State as an architect or engineer. An applicant must also submit a plot plan for new construction, an addition, deck, fence, shed, garage, and pool. The plot plan should indicate:- All existing and proposed structures on the property- The distances to all lot lines- The location of any easements THE PERMIT PROCESSAll permit applications are brought to the Code Enforcement Department. Code Enforcement will forward any application to the Zoning Officer if required. After zoning approval, if necessary, the documents are reviewed by the building, electric, plumbing and fire subcode officials for completeness and code conformance. This process may take up to 20 working days. Minor work, such as roofing and siding, require minimal plan review. Usually, the permit for minor work is issued within 10 working days. If the documents do not comply with the UCC, the applicant will be notified of the violations and will be required to correct and resubmit the documents for further review. The permit is issued indicating that legal approval has been given to begin the construction project. State law mandates that the Construction Official issue a fine of up to $500 to any person who performs work without a permit.

Code - cont Fire Subcode Inspections- Final inspection which includes a performance test to demonstrate its efficiency of operation and alarmsFor renovations and projects other than new construction, contact the Code Enforcement Department for inspection requirements. OBLIGATION DURING CONSTRUCTIONCode inspections can be scheduled on an am/pm basis. The applicant may request the day and time window (8 am – 12 noon, or 1 pm – 5 pm). In some cases, due to the nature of the inspections, those scheduled for morning might need to be performed in the afternoon. Also, if there is no access for the inspector to conduct his/her inspections, a sticker will be left notifying applicants to reschedule their inspection.Inspectors must have a minimum of 24 hours advance notice and must be able to see the part of construction required to be inspected. Any work that does not conform to the approved plans will require re-inspection. If the work continues without resolving the problem, the applicant will be fined and the job stopped. Applicants are required to post the permit prominently on the site and to keep a copy of the approved plans at the site. When the project is completed, the applicant must call for final building, electric, plumbing and fire inspections. The applicant must also apply for a Certificate of Occupancy. If the work is approved, a Certificate will be issued indicating permission to use the area for the intended purpose. Property must be properly identified – House number conspicuously displayed for viewing from the street and construction placard conspicuously displayed on the building.

DEMOLITIONSThe demolishing and removal of a building or structure and the removal of all the debris from the parcel of land require a permit from the Township Department of Code Enforcement. The following documents must be completed and submitted in order to file an application for the demolition of any structure: A copy of the property survey showing the location of the structure(s) to be removed. • Certificate stating the structure has been properly baited. • Letter from Utility Company stating electric and gas has been disconnected. • Letter from Telephone Company stating service has been disconnected. • Construction Permit Application. • Building Subcode Form. • Plumbing Subcode Form (Signed and Sealed by a Licensed Plumber for the capping of the sewer and water lines.) • If a septic tank is utilized, it must be located and abandoned in accordance with N.J.D.E.P. regulations. • If there is a well, a letter from a Licensed Well Contractor is required stating the well has been capped. • Debris Disposal Form. • Compliance with U.C.C. Subchapter 8, Asbestos Abatement, if applicable. • Compliance with N.J.A.C. 5:17, Lead Hazard Abatement, if applicable. When the Permit is ready to be issued, you will be notified by phone. You will be told the amount of the permit fee, which you will pay when the Permit is picked up. For building inspections, a separate inspection is required after the basement has been excavated and removed prior to backfill. All debris must be removed from the excavated site and properly disposed of prior to the first inspection. The final inspection will be performed after area is fine graded and stabilized. For plumbing inspections, the final inspection for capping of sewer and water lines must be completed prior to building demolition.

Transportation • Bridgewater is cris-crossed by several major highways, including Interstate 287, Interstate 78, U.S. 22, Route 202-206 and Route 28. • The Raritan Valley Line of NJ Transit also passes through Bridgewater. There are two stations in the Finderne area, and the Bridgewater station on the old American Cyanamid property. • NJ Transit bus service is provided on the 114 route to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, to Newark on the 65 line (Limited) and local Wheels service on the 884 and 989 bus routes. • Bridgewater Township is serviced by three local airports, Solberg-Hunterdon Airport to the west in Readington, Somerset Airport to the north in Bedminster Township, and Central Jersey Regional Airport to the south in Manville. These airports are open to the public and offer charter flight services as well as flight training and other aviation related services. They operate in all weather conditions and have instrument approaches available for use by pilots in bad weather. • Scheduled commercial passenger service is provided by Newark Liberty International Airport, located approximately 32 miles (51 km) away in Newark / Elizabeth.
BridgewaterTrain Station Bridgewaterrailroad station on the Raritan Valley Line, in Bridgewater, New Jersey is part of New Jersey Transit. The station sits on the site of the former "Calco" station that served American Cyanamid prior to its closure. It was reconstructed in 1999 in conjunction with the construction of TD Bank Ballpark, and the ballpark's White Lot is used for station parking. The station has two short side platforms that can only berth two cars. The station house (on the eastbound side) only contains some benches, maps, and heaters. There are no ticket vending machines. The station is not ADA accessible at this time. The parking lot will be under new management WLABT LLC (Somerset Patriots) at $4 daily and $150 quarterly as of June 1, 2009. Somerset Patriots fans will continue to pay $2 per game.
