  1. Facilitating the Conscience Emergence of Integral Leadership: Strategically Navigating Our Interconnected, Living World. Coherent Leadership

  2. Overview • An urgent need for new public leadership • Imperative for change • The evolution of complex systems: The “logic” of evolution demonstrates the need for whole system change. • Introduction to living systems theory • Introduction to Strategic Navigation. • Embedded reflective practice • Integrated consciousness • Personal reflective practice - why it’s critically important for leadership(perception, awareness, compassion)

  3. Problem Statement: An Urgent need for new Public Leadership: The Human world has become unstable and is no longer sustainable. Our reality is shifting to a new relational reality that is radically new and intrinsically surprising. We are living in an age of bifurcation in the midst of fundamental transformation in our world: A reality shift in our relationship to each other, to nature and to the cosmos. Change is not merely an option, it is imperative to our survival. We have an urgent need for a new leadership logic that replaces linear, reductionistic models with a more resilient, moral, adaptive, intelligence driven means of organizing and managing human affairs, in alignment with the inherent energy, interconnectedness and nonlinear nature of global and systemic transformation. Laszlo, E. (2008) Quantum Shift in the Global Brain: How the new scientific reality can change us and our world. Inner Traditions, Rochester. Hames, R. (2007) The Five Literacy’s of Global Leadership. Jossey-Bass, West Sussex.

  4. Literature Review:Global Social Macroshift We are on the threshold of a global Macroshift • Shortsighted power and profit-hunger, coupled with powerful technologies has triggered climate change, is producing famine, water scarcity, coastal flooding and other equally threatening processes in ecology. • The increasing gap between rich and poor with attendant frustration, fundamentalism and terrorism, triggering crime, violence and war. • Depending on the evolution of the dominant civilization, society either breaks down in violence and chaos or breaks through to a more adaptive sustainable civilization. 6. The Evolutionary Process: complex systems undergo irreversible change: Crisis BREAKDOWN BREAKTHROUGH Laszlo, E. (2008) Quantum Shift in the Global Brain: How the new scientific reality can change us and our world. Inner Traditions, Rochester. Pp 26-34.

  7. The Phases of a Macroshift Two phases are behind us, the last phase is ahead of us – we are living in phase 3 – the critical phase of social bifurcation. Laszlo, E. (2008) Quantum Shift in the Global Brain: How the new scientific reality can change us and our world. Inner Traditions, Rochester. pp 26-34.

  8. Social Evolution through Macroshifts: • Societies formed by human beings undergo the same evolutionary process as biological systems. With each emerging epoch we see: • Increasingly sophisticated technology and social innovation drives the bifurcation. • Increased complexity is achieved in the social organization. • Chart adapted from Laszlo, E. (2008) Quantum Shift in the Global Brain: How the new scientific reality can change us and our world. Inner Traditions, Rochester. P.25.

  9. “The revised understanding of the causal role of human consciousness in the unfolding of reality…is the most important contribution of science to the well being of our species.” Stapp, 2007 In the human world, unlike in nature, a bifurcation can be decisively influenced by purposeful, conscious intention.(Stapp, 2007; Bohm,1990; Scwartz, et.al , 2003) We have the unique opportunity and responsibility to decide the fate of our species. The current bifurcation point and the requirement for a timely shift from the breakdown to the breakthrough path. Chart adapted from Laszlo, E. 10. Living Systems Theories: • Principles derived from Chaos, Complexity and Emergence Theories Are fundamental to creating institutions, organizations, governance and social systems that exist in harmony with the natural world rather than in opposition to it. • Chaos : sensitivity to initial conditions; Butterfly Effects • Complexity : organisms can achieve ever increasing levels of complexity, and demonstrate self organizing principles. • Emergence: coherent patterns amid the apparent chaos. • Living Systems Theory’s allow us to identify trends and patterns that can be observed, understood, codified and leveraged to facilitate evolution toward viable strategic fitness. Gleick, James. 1987. “Chaos: making a new science” Penguin Books, New York, N.Y. Lorenz, E.N. 1964. The problem of deducing climate from the governing equations. Tellus 16: 1-11.Lorenz, E.N. 1979. 11. Strategic Navigation:The terrain of transformation. A process of co-evolution; moving organizations to higher levels of wisdom by engaging all members in collective conscious awareness of choices, and consequences flowing from those decisions, thus ensuring appropriate, real time responses to emergent strategic issues. Key Concepts - are based on pathological diagnosis and system leverage Key Methodologies - are derived from system dynamics. Tools and Techniques - are different and require new ways of obtaining and understanding information including: • Increased strategic range of perspective. Leadership Skills – Leaders will require an entirely new class of proficiencies. • Enhanced intellectual skills – involving systems thinking and managing paradox. • Finely tuned emotional skills – comfort with non-closure, uncertainty and ambiguity. • Exceptional interpersonal skills – collaborative learning, strategic conversation group reflection; sensitivity to behavioral nuances of others; creating safety. • Exceptional Intrapersonal reflective skills – perceptual awareness, intuition, compassion, sensitivity to personal biases, nuances, conscious awareness and humility. 12. Paradigmatic Shift to Strategic Navigation:Everything has to be re-learned. The Definition: • Strategic Navigation uses knowledge of living systems to create an operating system for managing complexity founded on principles derived from chaos, complexity and network science; balanced by mastery of self awareness and interpersonal skills and supported by neuroscience, biology and contemplative sciences. • Strategic Navigation requires that leaders adopt an operating system that is completely transformed from historical models. A system that can ensure that all members of an organization respond appropriately, in real time to emergent strategic issues. • This assists in co-evolving the business/organization to higher levels of wisdom in which people are collectively conscious of their choices, as well as the consequences flowing from those decisions. 13. Implications of the Findings for Curricular Development • The Hamesian model assumes that leaders already possess deep mastery of the reflective skills and competencies needed to facilitate whole system change so that they can lead others through a process of deep exploration and questioning. • We’re not preparing leaders to be able to do that • It requires an understanding of the importance of diversity for resilience, neurophysiological safety to keep people engaged & present, living systems competencies and person mastery. • It requires embracing the non-material world of emotion, energy, sensing, intuition, awarenessing, contemplative non-judgment, questioning and discernment. • As human beings, we are the most complex of the complex adaptive systems. We are not intended, nor is it natural for us to operate in a linear, logical manner. This has been imposed on us by material science and a Protestant work ethic and belief system of rationalism. We have forgotten who we are and our connection to the universal order, and without that understanding, we are groundless… searching for connection

  14. New Public Leadership: Summary and Conclusions. The Human world has become unstable and is no longer sustainable. Our survival is dependent on a new leadership logic that replaces linear, reductionistic models with a more resilient, moral, adaptive, intelligence driven means of organizing and managing human affairs, in alignment with the inherent energy, interconnectedness and nonlinear nature of global and systemic transformation. We need new methods and models to teach leaders how do facilitate this kind of work. We need academic models that are built on integration, rather than reductionism and we need to embrace a quantum reality that connects us, rather than separates us from one another. Laszlo, E.
