  3. Context Clues • Discovering the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

  4. Steps to Teaching Context Clues • First, the reader should recognize that the word is unknown. • Second, the reader needs to decide the meaning of the word instead of skipping over the word. • Third, the reader should look at the word and break it into known parts.

  5. Steps to Teaching Context Clues • Fourth, the reader will look at the passage to find information that might aid in discovering the meaning of the word. • Fifth, the reader will use context clues and background to gather the meaning of the unknown word. • Lastly, the reader will test the meaning of the word in the sentence to decide if the word makes sense.

Standards • ELACC2RI4:Determine the meanings of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. • ELACC2L4:Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. • a. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
