Dr. Sharon Jaye The Westminster Schools Assistant Director of Facilities Campus Sustainability Coordinator
School as a Learning Laboratory • Students spend 8 hours a day in classroom buildings and on campus. • Facility managers are faced with sustainability issues every day in the way they manage and operate the built environment. • Learn about opportunities for buildings and faculty to meet in the middle to educate students about environmental stewardship. • Illustrations are given in energy, water, materials, waste management, and site impact. • Brainstorm ideas you can use in your classroom!
School as a Learning Laboratory National Environmental Education Foundation • Permit: granting students permission to become involved in sustainability initiatives. • Educate & engage: providing students educational materials and engaging them in sustainability activities. • Act: empowering students to take action at school, as well as at home and in their community. • Embed: making sustainability a regular part of their school. • Evaluate: measuring and evaluating engagement efforts to gauge impact and support continued integration into school culture.
School as a Learning Laboratory • What is the facility department doing? • Opportunities for student-led projects? • Opportunities for student-led research? • What are our baselines for energy and waste? • Opportunities for volunteerism – where does facilities need help? • Opportunities for competitions? • Can facilities bring in vendors to present to students?
Env. Science Semester Project Semester-long project • Students split into teams • Find something on campus that could be improved sustainably • Design project to implement (do it if you can) • Report on findings or design • End of semester “green” fair open to campus
“If These Walls Could Talk” Class • Unit 1- Form and Function: Architectural Design and the Environmental Challenge • Unit 2- From Hearth to Heat Pump: The Science of Conditioned Space • Unit 3- The Skin We’re In: The Materials of the Structural Envelope • Unit 4- Let There be Light: Innovations in Space Illumination • Unit 5- FF&E: Cost-effective, Durable, and Sustainable Furnishings • Unit 6- Maintaining Health: Paint, Cleaning Products, Paper Products and Waste Management • Unit 8- Making the Grade: LEED and other Standards of Green Buildings • Unit 9- The Quest for the Holy Grail: Zero Energy Buildings
Environmental Science Class • Water quality testing in Nancy Creek • Tree identification on campus • Garden work - planting in the outdoor garden beds as well as seeding plants in the greenhouse • Solar panel • Walking paths - looking at the biodiversity on the trails on campus
Green Cup Challenge ….use results to educate
Weather • Heating degree day (HDD) or Cooling degree day (CDD) • A measurement designed to reflect the demand for energy needed to heat or cool a home or business. Measurement of outside air temperature (plus/minus 65 degrees) Example: January 10th average temperature = 42 degrees 65 degrees – 42 degrees = 23 HDD August 10th average temperature = 83 degrees 83 degrees – 65 degrees = 18 CDD
Energy Audit Do your own energy audit! • Toilets • Faucets • Showerheads • Gallons used before water gets hot? • Count bulbs and look at the type • Check your appliances • Power Vampires? • Windows (are they double-paned) • Check doors for air leaks • Insulation in attic • South side of building?
Waste Audit Do your own waste audit! • 6th and 11th grade students as part of science class. • Facilities train 11th graders • 11th graders train 6th graders • 11th graders crunching number to determine sample size • Student environmental group providing campus education after the audit.
Brainstorming Ideas • Energy Management • Water Management • Materials & Resources • Waste Management • Indoor Environmental Quality • Site Impacts • Carbon Footprint
