WEATHER AND NAVIGATION RADAR KONTUR-10C The Weather Radar Kontur-10C, ser. 4, 5 • Weather radar Kontur-10C was designed by Russian company Kontur - NIIRS and is in serial production arrangement of Kontur-10C antennas are shown on the next page. • The Kontur-10C, weather radar is used in medium-range (An-72 -148, Tu-134, -154) and long-range aircraft (IL-76, А50)http://kontur-niirs.ru/en/ustanovka.shtml The radar provides: • Built-in test to locate a fault up the level of a unit. • Detection of convective airborne moisture targets (thunderstorms, large cumulus clouds) with a possibility of determining the extent of hazard they impose on the aircraft flight, hazardous turbulence within the moisture targets. • Range of detection of airborne moisture targets with the following precipitation rate: • 0.6mm/h (20dBZ) – 220 km; • 2.5mm/h (30dBZ) – 400 km; • 12 mm/h (40dBZ) – 600 km.
WEATHER AND NAVIGATION RADAR KONTUR-10C The Weather Radar Kontur-10C, ser. 4, 5 is • Automatic detection of hazardous airborne moisture targets within the range up to 150 km, and turbulence within the range up to 100 km. • Detection of radar-contrast reference marks: • Towns (V. Novgorod) at Н=7000 m – 150-200km; • Ships (2000 tons at Н=3000 m – 50-70 km; • Coastline at Н=7000 m – 250 km; • Range resolution – 100-600 m; • Azimuth resolution - 5°. • The range scales are from 5 to 640 km or from 5 to 320 nautical miles • The radar has a high performance figure due to the digital processing of signal on the intermediate frequency, linearity of receiver (greater than 65dB), optimized digital processing of signals for each operating mode and range scale. • The state-of-the-art element base enabled to reduce weight and size of the radar, and to improve the reliability. • The assigned service life of the weather radar is 15 years (30000 flight hours).
WEATHER AND NAVIGATION RADAR KONTUR-10C • The Kontur-10C, ser. 4, is the latest model of the radar with increased range of detection of airborne moisture targets, turbulent areas within the moisture targets, warning of crew about the moisture target segments which cannot be used for passing due to the lack of true information because of attenuated radio waves. • The multifunctional display (MFD) is the latest design, certified in 2005. The MFD uses the up-to-date element base of high-capacity graphics processors. • The transceiver has a super-high sensitivity due to the digital processing of signal on intermediate frequency. The processing algorithms enable to unambiguously define the segments within the airborne moisture targets that present hazard for flying, whereas the up-to-date element base in the form of signal processors enabled to reduce power consumption and significantly improve the reliability. This model of transceiver has been in production since early 2004, and is the latest of its kind (based on incandescence-free magnetron). • The Kontur - NIIRS company is developing an additional feature for the Kontur-10C radar - “Wind Shear" operation mode. This development is expected to be completed in 2015. • The indication of GPS, TCAS and EGPWS data on MFD was done on AN-72 aircraft.

WEATHER AND NAVIGATION RADAR KONTUR-10C • Radar Kontur-10C series 5 is different from radar Kontur-10C series 4. There are some following additional function realized in 5th series: • Vertical profile of meteorological formations; • Automatic antenna tilt. To implement this feature, the altimeter VBE-2A should be installed on board the aircraft. • Working radar at “land” mode, displaying the signal reflected from the earth’s surface is indicated by red and green with four gradations of brightness. In a series 4 radar mapping of the reflected signal is green only one gradations (mono).

MFD is designed for controlling and displaying the data from different types of: - radars; - TAWS; - TCAS; - satellite navigation systems; - video cameras; - systems of independent monitoring. 2. By a part of SES,MFD also stores the coordinates of the detected objects in its memory.
