  1. Are you a thief?

  2. You shall not steal The 8th Commandment Exodus 2:15

  3. Framework for the 10 commandments. • The 1st commandment and the prologue grounds the rest of the commandments. • Jesus often intensifies the 10 commandments. (e.g. The Beatitudes-Matt 5). • The 10 commandments are worked out by us loving God with all our heart and mind and soul, and by loving our neighbors like ourselves. (Matt 22:37-40).

  4. You shall not steal……what?

  5. The biblical extent of stealing. Stealing is not just restricted to property and possessions. You can be guilty of stealing a person’s life. (Exodus 21:16, Joseph’s account-Gen 40:15).

  6. Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, To deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. Isaiah 10:1-2

  7. Memory verses for all Chinaman Businessmen. “You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength, yet your father cheated me by changing my wages 10 times.” (Gen 31:6-7). Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him. Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight. (Lev 19:13).

  8. You got to be ruthless to make it to the top. “Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence”. (Jas 5:4-6)

  9. The Bible particularly deplores stealing from the poor and marginalized. (Deut 24:14, Lev 25:35-38, Lev 19:13).

  10. This is what the Lord says: For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Amos 2:4-6

  11. The poor are not to take advantage of the rich- this too is stealing. (Deut 23:24).

  12. If you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any of in your basket. If you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to his standing grain. (Deut 23:24-25).

  13. Tomorrow morning when you go about your work, remember... • Stealing is not just restricted to property and possessions. You can be guilty of stealing a person’s life. • The Bible particularly deplores stealing from the poor and marginalized. • The poor are not to take advantage of the rich- this too is stealing.

  14. Learning from donkeys.(Exodus 22)

  15. You may be as bad as a thief if you are… • Betraying trust, affecting other people’s means of making a living (22:7-9). • Irresponsible in your actions, affecting other people’s means of making a living (22:10-15). • Selective in your charity, affecting your enemies means of making a living (23:4).

  16. We tend to view theft from an individual perspective. • Scripture teaches us to view theft from a divine and communal perspective.

  17. Transforming a robber to a helper. • He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work with his hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. (Eph 4:28). • It is not enough to stop stealing, but to also help those in need.

  18. Love your neighbor as yourself We are commanded to promote and further our neighbor’s interest, and when they suffer any want, we are to help, share, and lend to both friends and foes. (Martin Luther on the 8th commandment in “Large Catechism”)

  19. “You cannot serve God and mammon” Matt :24/Luke 16:13

  20. “You become successful to fulfill God’s purpose in your life”. “It’s a lifestyle (prosperity)..it’s a way of living”. (Sermon- “Understanding prosperity”).

  21. “Your seed must be planted in good ground. Farmers look for good ground to sow seeds to get a harvest. Be harvest minded. Don’t go for the need of the ground, go for the harvest it can bring”. (Sermon- “10 laws of the harvest”)

  22. “Whatever seed we sow, we will reap the harvest of it’s kind-when we sow love, we reap love, when we sow money, we will be blessed financially”. (CHC Church member quote, Yahoo News Singapore 29/06/12).

  23. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest , therefore to send out workers into the harvest field”. (Matt 9:37-38)

  24. “The one who received the seed that fell among thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.” (Parable of the Sower- Matt 13v22)

  25. The Rich Young Man “…go sell your possessions and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” (Matt 19:21)

  26. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your hear will be also. (Luke 12:32-34)

  27. Contentment Two things I ask of you, do not deny them to me before I die, Remove far from me falsehood and lying, give me neither poverty nor riches, But give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and deny you, and say “Who is the Lord?” or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:7-9)
