  2. 1.02 Warm-up 9/19/18 (copy) Mission Statement: A formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual. American Red Cross: to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being.

  3. Stop and think Which is an example of a mission statement for human services organization? • To increase patient satisfaction by 10% • To require employees to sign a confidentially statement • To raise $100,000 in donations • To inspire and empower people affected by poverty

  4. 1.02 Warm-up 2/19/18 Recidivism: a tendency for a person to relapse into criminal behavior, often after intervention for the same crime Ex: Joseph robbed a bank a month after being released from prison for the same offense. This behavior is recidivism. If your seat has been moved, sit somewhere else for the time being.

  5. Human Services Delivery Systems and Organizations • Everyday in the United States people need help with housing, medical needs, substance and drug abuse and many other issues. • Who helps? How do they help? Lets take a look…

  6. Federal Agencies The United States Government offers help to citizens with many delivery systems. The US Department of Health and Human Services for oneincludes the following agencies: • Administration for Children and Families • Center for Disease Control • Centers for Medicaid and Medical Services • Food and Drug Administration • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

Federal US Dept. of Health and Human Services- A family of agencies dedicated to helping citizens, especially lower income and at risk populations with services to better their health. • Administration For Children and Families- These programs include assistance with welfare, child support enforcement, adoption assistance, foster care, child care, and child abuse. • Center for Disease Control-(CDC) It especially focuses its attention on infectious disease, environmental health, occupational safety and health, health promotion, injury prevention and educational activities to improve health. In addition, the CDC researches and provides information on non-infectious diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Federal continued • Center for Medicaid and Medical Services- that administers the Medicare program and works in partnership with state governments to administer Medicaid, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and health insurance portability standards. • Food and Drug Administration-(FDA) Protects and promotes public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, cosmetics, animal foods & feed and veterinary products. • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services- Improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services in order to reduce illness, death, disability, and cost to society resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses.

  9. Federal continued Another Federal Agency is the Unites States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Also known as HUD. This agency assists through the following divisions: • Community and Planning Development • Federal Housing Administration • Public and Indian Housing • Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity

Federal continued • Community Planning Development- Help communities plan and finance their growth and development, increase their capacity to govern, and provide shelter and services for homeless people. • Federal Housing Administration- Improve housing standards and conditions, provide an adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans, and to stabilize the mortgage market. • Public Indian Housing-Ensures safe, decent, and affordable housing, create opportunities for residents' self-sufficiency and economic independence, and assure the fiscal integrity of all program participants. • Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity- Enforces federal fair housing laws and establishing policies that make sure all Americans have equal access to the housing of their choice.

  11. Another Federal Agency is the Unites States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This agency assists through the following divisions: • Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion • Food and Nutrition Service • Food Safety and Inspection Service • Rural Development

Federal continued • Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion- works to improve the health and well-being of Americans by developing and promoting dietary guidance that links scientific research to the nutrition needs of consumers. • Food and Nutrition Service- increases food security and reduces hunger in partnership with cooperating organizations by providing children and low-income people access to food, a healthy diet, and nutrition education in a manner that supports American agriculture and inspires public confidence. • Food Safety and Inspection Service- enhances public health and well-being by protecting the public from foodborne illness and ensuring that the nation's meat, poultry and egg products are safe, wholesome, and correctly packaged. • Rural Development- Helps rural areas to develop and grow by offering Federal assistance that improves quality of life. RD targets communities in need and then empowers them with financial and technical resources.

  13. Along with the Federal help that is available most STATES also have help for their citizens. Some of our STATE agencies include: • NC Department of Public Instruction • NC Department of Health and Human Services • NC Office of the Attorney General, Consumer Protection • NC Cooperative Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension • NC Department of Agriculture

  14. State • NC Department of Health and Human Services, Social Services- Protect children, strengthen families, and help all North Carolinians to achieve maximum self-sufficiency. Issue Food Stamps, heating assistance and administer Child Protection Services. • NC Dept. of Public Instruction- Implements the State's public school laws and State Board of Education's policies governing public education. Implement the School Nutrition Program for the US Department of Agriculture. • NC Division of Child Development and Early Education- A division of the NC Health and Human Services Division that governs, guides and regulates early education, child cares and assists in meeting needs for children and families.

State • NC Department of Justice, Attorney General’s Office- Protect NC consumers by fighting unfair business practices like scams and frauds. • NC Cooperative Extension- Partnership between government, land-grant universities (NC State and NC A&T) and Department of Agriculture to provide educational programing in areas like: protecting the environment, maintaining viable communities, developing responsible youth, and developing strong, healthy and safe families. • NC Division of Child Development and Early Education- A division of the NC Health and Human Services Division that governs, guides and regulates early education, child cares and assists in meeting needs for children and families.
