Scientists • http://la.rsmjournals.com/cgi/reprint/29/2/121 • D. Specialists • http://la.rsmjournals.com/cgi/reprint/33/1/1 • In Finnish • http://www.uku.fi/jarjestot/FinLAS/

  3. Category C competence • FELASA guidelines • Multilateral consultations in Council of Europe (CoE) 1993 • 80 h • Topics • UK / Home office • European Science Foundation (ESF) • ’accredited courses’ • www.esf.org

  4. Application & fee annual (B,C) or biannual (A,D) reports YES NO FELASA Accreditation – quality system for education • Accreditation board • Nomination: FELASA board • Processes applications Applicant • Maintaining accreditation • A & D – 10 years • B & C – 5 years ‘FELASA Accredited Training’

  5. Working methods • Lectures • Analgesia exercise • Design group tasks • Cost-benefit group task • Refereeing exercise • Ethics committee application

  6. Laboratory Animal Science ? • Jann Hau: • Basic LAS: Concerns the animals themselves • Applied LAS: Deals with the animal as a scientific model

  7. Laboratory Animal Science ? • K-J. Öbrink: • Laboratory animal science is a science auxiliary to biological and medical research, but still a well demarcated discipline in research and teaching. • It consists of four main parts: • genetics and characteristics of laboratory animals • effect of homeostatic mechanisms on animal experiments • laboratory animal husbandry and basic animal experiment methodology • legislation, decrees and laboratory animal ethics

  8. LAS / Philosophy • Long history • Aristoteles (384-322 B.C.): Experiment with groups before explanation attempt • Galen (130-200 A.D.), Harvey 1657), Boyle (1627-1691), Hunter (1728-1823), Jenner (1749-1823), Darwin (1809-1882), Pasteur (1822-1895), Koch (1843-1910), Banting and Best (1922) • Nobel price in medicine 58 times

  9. LAS / Philosophy • Animals can be used for establishment of hypotheses, but verification requires experiments on humans

  10. LAS Environment Today • Research is in unbelievable pace • Expectations of society may be unrealistic • Despite increased number of projects, animal numbers per project are decreasing • Expectations for work quality of LAS personnel is higher than ever • Emphasis on 3Rs • The way to cope with this is education
