  2. The Civil War • Started April 12, 1861 • Ended April 9, 1865

  3. The Union States • California, Connecticut,, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, , Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rode Island, and Vermont • Their President was Abraham Lincoln

  4. The Border States • West Virginia • Kentucky • Missouri • Delaware • Maryland • These states had slavery but decided to not leave the Union

  5. The Confederate States • South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. • Their President was Jefferson Davis

  6. Confederate Alliances • Britain and France • The South needed alliances because they were an Agrarian Society; meaning they only supplied for their family so they didn’t have enough supplies to help them in the war.

  7. Fort Sumter • April 12, 1861 • Charleston, NC • Major Anderson was ordered by Lincoln the protect the fort • Brigadier Gen. Beauregard attacked • Anderson surrendered on April 14th • The confederates took over the fort

  8. First Battle At Bull Run • Began July 21, 1862 • Fought at the Occoquan River • Brigadier Gen. Irvin McDowell (Union) hoped to capture Confederates capital • Brigadier Gen. Beauregard and Colonel Jackson (Confederate) supplied their troops • Union retreated to Washington D.C • Casualties: Union- 2896 Confederates- 1982

  9. Battle Of Gettysburg • July 1-3 1863 • Gettysburg, Pennsylvania • Major Gen. George Meade(union) • Gen. Robert E. Lee(Confederate) • Casualties: Union-93,921 Confederate- 71,699 • The first day the Confederates where doing well , but the third day the Union won with their outstanding rifle and artillery fire

  10. The Second Battle Of Fort Fisher • Jan 13th ,1865 • Wilmington, NC , Fort Fisher • Major Gen. Alfred Terry, Rear Admiral David Porter (Union) • Major Gen. W.H.C Whiting, Robert F. Hoke (Confederate) • Casualties: Union- 1,338 Confederate- 583

  11. Battle Of Appomattox Courthouse • April 9th , 1865 • Appomattox Courthouse, VA • Gen. Robert E. Lee • Gen. Ulysses S. Grant • Casualties: Union - 164 Confederate- 500 • Lee surrendered, the South was set free

  12. Weapons • Cannons: Napoleon 12 pound shot, Howitzer 12, 24, and 32 pound shot • Explosive canisters • Rifles used by both sides • Swords • Pistols: Colt 1851 Navy (Confederates) and the Colt Army 1860 (Union) both single action, six shots

  13. Vehicles • Ships: U.S.S Monitor , C.S.S North Carolina • Horses: (Generals rode these mostly) • Wagons; used to carry supplies and injured soldiers

  14. HowDid The Civil War Effect Americas Future ? The Civil War helped us realize slavery is wrong and that just because we don’t agree on something doesn’t mean we should just give up and leave. I believe that even if the Civil War didn’t happen, we wouldn’t have slavery today. I think we would just be separate from them.
