  1. How and why use Data? What does it all Mean!

  2. Data is nothing more that collection of numbers!! • The power comes when we interrupt this data! • The problems also come when we interrupt data. • We have to know what was purpose of the assessment or survey used to collect data. • Be careful not to look for what we want to see or not see.

  3. What are the three tools Willmar District is using to gather data. • Aims Web- It is a quick screening tool used to identify strengths and weakness of students in particular area. • OLPA and MCA Testing: are designed to evaluate school performance. • Formative Assessments: are designed to determine student weakness and strengths. • By using all three tools we can get a good idea what is happening with our students academic growth in each building and classroom. • Then as we look at this data over time a picture starts to appear that shows us trends.

  4. Data only shows part of picture!

  5. Why is this teacher and students so successful? We have teachers in all grades throughout our elementary system who have this kind results. There is a reasons why this teacher and others educators in our buildings get these incredible results. As we look at data- What would a building data look like if every classroom k- 5 looked like this one. Is that possible?

  6. 3rd Grade OLPA Fall Results • Will 80% of these 3rd graders student's pass MCA ? • How does this compare to 4th and 5th grade fall results? • Are 69% of our students ready for 3rd Grade ? • Is this just third grade teachers problem? • Do we need to change anything we are doing?

  7. 4th Grade OLPA Data Is it possible for 80% of these students to pass 4th Grade MCA this spring? How does this compare to our third grade results? How does this compare to other schools in state? How did sub-groups perform? Is the fact 47% of our students are at least partially ready to pass 4th good?

  8. 5th Grade Fall OLPA Results Is it possible for 60 % of these students to pass 5th Grade MCA this spring? How does this compare to our 3rd or 4th grade fall results? How does this compare to the state spring average of 55%? Did how did sub-groups perform? Is the fact 50% of our students are at least partially ready to pass 5th good?

  9. Which of three assessments do you think had most impact on my example teacher’s data? Clues: * 5 of 6 teachers in this grade level had strong positive data. * PLC spent a lot of time writing and working on assessments * They differentiated inside the classroom. * Teacher believed that he could get all student in classroom to succeed. * I could walk in this classroom any day and find evidence of quality instruction.

  10. There are Great Teachers at Roosevelt! Opinion- Teaching is one of the most challenge and important jobs we have in our country. When NASA sends a rover to Mars or a man on the moon. Do they put one man in room and tell him to figure it. Why should we as an educators believe can do our challenging job alone. I believe the answer to Roosevelt’s success is sitting next to you. We need to find out why we some teachers have great results and duplicate that in all rooms throughout our district.
