A Warm Welcome to You All! DxVxF ≥ R = (P+C) D = Dissatisfaction of the way things are now V = Vision of what is possible F = First steps towards the vision R = resistance to change (pain/psychological and cost (£££))
Dissatisfaction with the status quo • By the time the leave primary school 38% of 11 year olds in England have not mastered the basics of English and Maths. In Suffolk in 2009 1 in 3 of 11 year olds did not achieve a Level 4 (SAT level – average) • This means 1/3 of young people move onto the next stage of their learning without the skills they need to access the curriculum. • In 2009 only 48% of 16 year olds have with 5 A-C GCSEs (Eng+Maths) or Level 2 - the standard industry norm
Concerns: • Homework/assignments • Recognition of my role in the institution where I work • How to maintain continuity of support for young people moving on into FE • How do we implement the change needed to make HYPHOP work • I want to be able to use my skills as a success coach beyond HYPHOP • How can people tell I am a success coach? • Does the Youth Service and Connexions know about this course? • Work load will increase as schools will expect this to be an add on to my full time role • Time expected with each learner • The Success coach role is too big for one person • Will my head back and support this new role? • Will we have people to ask advice and share ideas?
Expectations • More experience working with pupils not in school • That I will be able to explain to my line manager what HYPHOP is all about • Expect to know where to get information • Expect of deliver a clear path of opportunity to a student • Interested in strategies for engagement to those not receptive to mentoring • Clear guidance on what is expected of a Success Coach • To be able to monitor progress as young people move on • Comprehensive understanding of learner needs • That I will understand what HYPHOP is all about
Reflective Evaluation • In pairs – using your guidance interviewing skills • Discuss your experience of Success Coach training • Discussyour personal next steps
