How to use ‘Times Table of the Week’ • Work out your class’ next most important fact to learn.Start by looking at your class’ heatmap (Pupil Setup > Stats > Band Headlines). • Look amongst the tables your class are expected to learn this year, e.g. the 2s, 5s and 10s. • Identify the reddest fact out of those. • Use our slide for that particular fact to display in class or print and stick on your classroom wall or door, in the corridor, reception or hall. • Each class may have their own fact of the week.

  46. Picking the facts of the week Each week I select a times table of the week (TTOTW) fact for both KS1 and KS2. This is informed by the excellent ‘heatmaps’ on Times Tables Rock Stars which tell me which facts are weakest across the different year groups. I try to look for facts that are universally slower than I’d like them to be within each key stage. In terms of the sheets, TT Rock Stars free download of all the sheets with visual representations of the facts are GREAT.

  47. The weekly launch Each Monday we have a whole-school assembly. During the assembly we show the TTOTW images for both KS1 and KS2. I’d usually recap the previous few weeks’ facts first to ensure these haven’t been forgotten and it is becoming increasingly fun trying to remember each one we’ve done since we started, in front of a hall full of children! This gives me or the Head a time to reinforce the importance of times tables and to ensure that the children can infer all the key multiplication/division facts from the initial fact presented to them before heading off to start their week.

  48. Displaying them The times tables of the week sheets go everywhere! I want children to see the facts and the corresponding visual representations EVERYHWHERE they go. So, toilet doors, corridors and classroom doors all get plastered with the images. We use adhesive plastic wallets to ensure these look neat and this also makes them easy to change each week. My latest thing is to also display these in outdoor displays on entry to the site so that parents can help with asking their children at home. All of the above has now become my new Monday morning routine (I manage a fair few steps between 7.30am and 8.00am on a Monday) but for those of you worried about time – just put an army of Year Sixes on it!

  49. Lunch hall I have recently set up a laptop in the school hall at lunch times with a rolling PowerPoint presentation showing images of the TT of the week, including slides where certain numbers are obscured and then revealed – giving children a chance to guess what is missing before having it revealed to them. This PPT also includes some images of ‘Baz Wynter’ saying some encouraging words about the importance of times tables! If even a handful of children choose to gaze up at this while eating their lunch, it has to be worth it! So far, so good. If I am on duty in the hall at lunch, I tend to put myself behind the salad bar to help serve the children. This gives me a chance to ask pretty much every child who comes past me a tables question. It has been nice seeing children not be able to answer a question correctly on Monday but by Wednesday they’re giving me the answer nice and quickly.
