  1. Work Life Integration With many City lawyers averaging over 100 chargeable hours a week, having their 3 square meals a day at their desk and having no time for hobbies or a family life, it is not surprising that many of you see an offshore career move as a way to regain control over your life. The only surprise to us is why there aren’t more who see it as a complete no brainer. It is worth stating the obvious, that a legal career is not the best in terms of work life balance* and an offshore role is not going to 9-5. However, it will certainly be a life changing improvement on life at a big city firm. (* a 2016 Glassdoor survey ranked Recruiter as the #1 job for work life balance, well done us). Work life balance is a term that has been around since the 1970s and really took off in the 2000s. A term we are hearing more and more now is work life integration. The notion being that your career is a very large and important part of your life it is still just one part of a bigger picture. Also, that what the picture looks like changes over time depending on your personal circumstances, ambitions etc. A new global survey via World Services Group polled over 1500 young professionals to gain insight into their relationship with their careers. Top of the list of the young professionals priorities was work life balance/integration. Also of importance was complexity of work, clear career development and collaboration. Does an offshore career move offer these things? Unquestionably YES! (On the flip side the number 1 dislike about their current job was the expected long hours). Offshore employers have always emphasised the lifestyle benefits of which ever jurisdiction it is that they are recruiting for. To have a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining the best talent it is important to have an understanding of what makes the millennial workforce ticks and how that changes over time. Although living on a picture postcard island is a good start!
