A Few Reasons for Studying Abroad • Studying abroad is a life-changing experience: you’ll meet new people, learn about new cultures, learn another language, see someplace new; • You’ll learn about yourself and become more independent and confident, able to handle new and different situations; • It gives you a new perspective that is invaluable in learning about education; • Have something to talk about at job interviews—STAND OUT to future employers.

  3. Courses • Take up to 7 credits • 3 credits of Educational Foundations (435) • 3 credits of Mathematics Education (420* or 490) • 1 credit of study abroad • Examine the similarities and differences of education practices in the US and Peru, including • How schools are organized -Public and Private Schools • Teacher preparation and training -Curricula and standards • Study learning theories while you yourself are learning about a new culture! • Create a mathematics curriculum project and teach in a Peruvian middle school classroom • Study and experience different cultural attitudes towards the nature of mathematics and mathematics education

  4. What Will We Be Doing? • 1 week of course work on UWO campus • 1 ½ weeks of classes in Lima and 1 ½ weeks traveling • Field trips during class days to public and private schools, governmental agencies, and international organizations - School visits - Peruvian Ministry of Education - Nonprofit Education Groups - Development Projects in Lima - Markets - Teach in a Peruvian school • Week long tour around Peru including jungle lodge, boating and hiking in the rainforest, hiking the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

  14. Puerto Maldonado and the Amazon Rainforest • Puerto Maldonado is a dynamic, young and bustling frontier city, on the Madre de Dios River, and the capital of Madre de Dios Department. • Virgin forest covers 98% of Madre de Dios, one of the most bio-diverse places in the world.

  15. We will hike and boat through the rainforest, stay in a jungle lodge, and visit an indigenous community.

  19. We’ll Hike to Machu Picchu…The trail goes over an Andean pass, and climbs down to Machu Picchu through cloudforest.

  21. When and How Much? • May 18-June 13, 2009 • Estimated base trip cost (including tuition, airfare, hotel, transportation, books/readings) is $3500. • Financial Aid is available to eligible students. • APPLICATION DEADLINE is Fri. Feb 6, 2009.
