Hot Topics:Fall Preseason Practice Period In cross country, field hockey, soccer and women’s volleyball: • Preseason practice 17 days prior to the first permissible contest or date of competition or five days prior to the first day of classes (whichever is earlier); • Limit student-athletes’ (SA) participation in countable athletically related activities during preseason practice period before first day of classes; • Move first permissible contest or date of competition to Thursday preceding September 6.

Hot Topics: Fall First Permissible Contest Exceptions • Permissible to play first contest between August 26 and September 1, 2010 if contracts were signed before August 6, 2009. • Permissible to begin practice for contests between August 26 and September 1, 2010 per the February 4, 2010 Committee for Legislative Relief blanket waiver.
Hot Topic: Reductions • Field Hockey and Soccer: Reduce the maximum number of contests from 20 to 18. • Women’s Volleyball: Reduce the maximum number of dates of competition from 28 to 26. • Basketball: Reduce the maximum number of contests from 27 to 26.

Hot Topics: Winter Break • In basketball; swimming and diving; indoor track and field and wrestling, no countable athletically related activities or travel from December 20 through December 26. • Permissible to travel December 20 after an away from home competition that occurs December 19, provided that is the earliest practical opportunity.
Hot Topics: Winter Break • In all sports, no voluntary athletically related activities on campus, unless the facility is open to the general student body, from December 20 through December 26.
Declaration of Playing Season • Prior to the beginning of the institutions playing season. • Must be on file in writing in the department of athletics. • Changes are permissible and also shall be in writing in the department of athletics. Bylaw 17.1.3
Countable Athletically Related Activities Countable athletically related activities include any meeting, activity or instruction involving sports-related information and/or having an athletics purpose, held for one or more SAs at the direction of, or supervised by, any member or members of the institution’s coaching staff. Bylaw 17.02.1
Countable Athletically Related Activities Exception - Strength and Conditioning Personnel • Strength and conditioning personnel may monitor voluntary individual workouts for safety purposes. • If the strength and conditioning coach is also a coaching staff member for one of the institution's intercollegiate teams, must perform such duties for all intercollegiate teams. Countable Athletically Related Activities Preseason Practice Period Cross country, field hockey, soccer and women’s volleyball. • Prior to the first day of class: • No more than six hours of countable athletically related activities per day. • Only five hours may be devoted to physical activity. • Any session with physical activity shall not exceed three hours.

Countable Athletically Related Activities Preseason Practice Period Five Day Acclimatization Period: Football. • No conditioning, speed, strength or agility tests prior to the start of the five-day acclimatization period. • No more than one on-field practice per day during the five-day period. • On-field practice should not last longer than three hours.

Countable Athletically related Activities: Preseason Football Walk-Through • Single practice days only. • May not be more than one hour. • Equipment, helmets, pads, blocking sleds or balls may not be used. • No conditioning activities may occur. • Three-hour “recovery” time between practice and walk-through.
Countable Athletically Related Activities Playing Season • Four hours per day, 20 hours per week. • Must provide one calendar day off per week. • Exception for golf practice rounds – may exceed the four hours per day, but must stay within 20 hours per week rule. • Multisport participants:20 hours total per week in all sports. Bylaw 17.1.6
Countable Athletically Related Activities Outside Playing Season • Only weight training, conditioning, individual skill instruction and, in football, review of game film. • Limited to eight hours per week of which not more than two hours per week may be spent in skill instruction and, in football, review of game film. • Prohibited one week prior to final exam period through conclusion of institution’s final examinations. Bylaw 17.1.6.2
Countable Athletically Related Activities: Skill Instruction • In sports other than football individual skill related instruction is permitted: • More than one group may participate. • Same or different facilities. • No co-mingling. • Each group must have a separate coach.

Countable Athletically Related Activities: Missed Class Time • Practice activities. • No class time shall be missed for practice activities except when a team is traveling to an away-from-home contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest. • Competition in nonchampionship segment. • In team sports, no class time shall be missed for competition. Nonchampionship Segment: 24 within 45 • 24 are considered “in-season”. • Other 21 are considered “out-of-season”. • No more than 20 hours per week and no more than 8 hours of “out-of-season” activities.
Nonchampionship Segment • Playing and practice seasons - nonchampionship segment - 24 within 45. • 24 days must be the same 24 days for all SAs on the same team. Official Interpretation July 2002, Item No. 5
Outside Competition General rule for sports other than basketball: • Permanently ineligible if the SA has competed as a member of an outside team against outside competition during the intercollegiate season. Bylaw 14.7.1 • See Bylaw 14.7.3.1 to determine who is subject to these regulations.
Outside Competition General rule for basketball: • Permanently ineligible if the SA has participated in any organized basketball competition except while representing the institution. Bylaw 14.7.2 • See Bylaw 14.7.4.2 to determine who is subject to these regulations for basketball.
Outside Competition When can a SA compete with an outside team? Sports other than basketball: • Outside the SA’s sport season. • Between segments of the sport season. • If one of the exceptions is met.
Outside Competition When can a SA compete with an outside team? Basketball: • Summer. • If one of the other exceptions is met.
Outside Competition When can a SA compete in outside competition as an individual? No restrictions on when a SA can compete as an individual. • Cannot represent an outside team. • Cannot receive expenses from an outside team. • Basketball SAs cannot take advantage of this exception. Bylaw 14.7.3.4

Outside Competition What about intramurals? • Official Interpretation December 1989, Item f. • SA’s participation in intramurals during playing season. • Intramurals are not considered outside competition; therefore SAs can compete in intramurals during the season.
Outside Competition What about intramurals? • Official Interpretation February 2009, Item b. • Intramural team competing against outside team. • Competition involving an institution’s intramural team against an outside team, including another institution’s intramural team is considered outside competition.
