  1. GRIM & DynaPos Overview, Examples and Results Dr. Benjamin Remondi benjamin.remondi@verizon.net Kendall Ferguson ferguson@xyzsofgps.com The XYZs' of GPS, Inc. P.O. Box 37 Dickerson MD 20842 www.xyzsofgps.com Voice: (301) 972-7402 Fax: (301) 349-2547

  2. Objective: Top-Level Description of GRIM and DynaPos • Kendall Ferguson • GRIM Software Description • DynaPos Software Description • Example GRIM/DynaPos Systems • Dr. Benjamin Remondi • DynaPos Results

  3. GRIM General Description • 32-Bit Windows program that standardizes and simplifies interfaces with various GPS receivers • Variety of Connections with GPS Receivers • Direct, Modem, Radio Modem, Cell, Iridium, TCP/IP • Active and Passive Connections • Provides data logging • Receiver native, RINEX, XYZ Compressed, and Status Logging • Real-Time Interface with application programs (*) • Provides playback of collected data • Useful for real-time development and post-mission analysis • Feature Rich (e.g., 70 Compression Levels)

  4. GRIM Real-Time Interface • Provides GPS Observation Data in a consistent format to processing applications • Each Manufacturer Uses Unique Message Formats • GRIM Format is RINEX-like • Two Transport Methods (i.e., the application communication technique) • XYZs Real-Time Interface Protocol (libraries available) • TCP/IP Sockets • Playback Feature • Post-Mission Analysis • Real-Time Application Development

  5. XYZ CORCompressed Observation Records • Each Compressed Observation Record is time independent • Configurable • Selectable Observation Types • Navigation Data (Optional) • Ionospheric Modeling Data (Optional) • Positional Data (Optional) • User selects based upon need and available bandwidth • Self Describing • Can be changed on-the-fly and it is clear to recipient • GRIM XYZ COR Output Interface • Direct RS-232, Modem, Radio Modem, Cell Phone, Iridium, and TCP/IP

  6. DynaPosDynamic Positioning Software • Provides Position and Velocity of a Moving Platform • Base station can be fixed or moving • Easily configured to static processing • Real-time and Post-Mission Processing • Single and Dual Frequency (Code and/or Carrier) • 15 User selectable observation combinations (e.g., Iono-Free) • Observation type can be changed on the fly. • Windows 32-Bit Program (engines also available) • Real-Time Output Messaging (*)

  7. DynaPos Features(continued) • On-The-Fly User Configurable Items • 15 Observable Combinations • Float or Integer Carrier • Editing Controls (e.g., elevation mask, data quality controls, satellites) • Measurement Sigmas (calibration) • Dynamic Response Parameters • Navigation Lightbar • Waypoint Trajectory Reference (creation and use) • Real-Time Plots • User Configurable Work Area

  8. DynaPos Features(continued) • Precise Orbits • Multiple Processing Modes • Coincident (Traditional) • Predictive (Low Latency) • For Example: • 6-second Base station epoch rate • 10 Hz. Rover epoch rate • 10 Hz. Rover solutions from DynaPos • Reduces Communication Bandwidth Requirements • Reduces Latency Due to Communication Links • Limited Multi-Baseline Capabilities

  9. DynaPos Real-Time Interface • Provides Rover Solutions to other Systems • Facilitates Quick Integration with other sensors/systems • Two Transport Methods (same as described for GRIM) • Playback feature facilitates development and troubleshooting of real-time applications • NSWC Example: • GRIMs/DynaPos Integrated with INS and Imaging System • Playback features and Real-Time Interfaces facilitated fully featured lab development and testing of complete system.

  10. USCG HA-NDGPS Example • High Accuracy - National Differential GPS System • Currently under initial proof of concept (Phase I/II) • See XYZs’ report to FWHA (July 12, 2002) • Low Frequency • Penetrating (i.e., not line-of-sight) • Long range broadcasts (excess of 150 miles v. 50 miles) • Currently providing 1 Hz. dual frequency real-time observation data • Proposed design: rovers receive data from 3 base stations simultaneously • GRIM provides XYZ compressed observation data for broadcast • General Components • GPS Base station data modulation • Rover uses demodulated base data and local GPS receiver data

  14. Hydrographic Example • Base Stations located on shore • Collects and logs base station GPS receiver data • Transmits XYZ compressed observation data (e.g., satellite or Iridium) • Mother-ship • Receives shore base station data • Re-transmits to several launches via radio • Uses the Iridium Satellite System (as an example)
