Who is the teacher? • Andy Gustafson • Associate Professor of Business Ethics • Ph.D. Marquette, MA Fordham • Grew up on Farm in Aurora, Nebraska
Purpose of Course • What are the effects of business on culture and society? • How does business change with culture? • How can we use our power in business for good?
Who will we meet in Vegas/LA? • CFOs, CEOs, Lower-level managers, etc • Mayors, City managers, firemen • Casino workers, hotel managers • Chamber of commerce people • A sociologist, a philosopher, an artist
Format of the course • 2 week travel component in May plus • 4 3-hour sessions in the spring • 2 at beginning of semester • 2 towards end of semester This course is 3 hrs of course credit
What do we do in the 4 sessions? • You read articles and watch videos to prepare you for the 2 weeks, so that you can hit the ground running in Vegas. • You will write a book review
What assignments will we have in May on the trip? • Participation (asking questions at site visits) • Journals (2 pages per day reflection) • Paper on topic related to the course (smart growth, Venetian Casino Business operation, water management at Salton Sea, etc etc)
When is that paper due? • July 1st (one month after we return)
Where will we stay? • In hotels and at Loyola Marymount (LA)
What are our expenses? • $1600 course fee for expenses • Food expenses (figure for 14 days) • Plane ticket to and from Las Vegas
What does the fee cover? • Hotel expenses • Disneyland and other tickets • Gas/Rental of vans for travel and tour
When is the course fee due? • ½ of fee will be due by the beginning of the spring semester, the other half will be due mid-semester
How do I sign up? • Just like for any Spring semester course • Your tuition is covered as part of the 18 hours you are allowed in the spring. • It is BUS479
