2. Literary Feature Review • Symbol: A physical object in a word of fiction that has a meaning in and above itself • Use this term sparingly! • When you saying things like “The men in the story symbolize danger to Ayah” you really mean that “The men in the story are characterized as a danger.” Get it right!

3. Tone • Tone is the author’s attitude about what he or she is writing about • In short stories, the tone does NOT change. • You may wish to discuss the way in which a character speaks . . .The character’s tone. But this is NOT a literary feature. • Instead, you say, “The way she speaks characterizes her as very upset because . . . . “

4. Mood • How you real after reading the story. • Do not use this more than once. • “This creates a mood of desperation.” • Ask yourself, do you feel desperate after reading the story? • If not, you have used the term incorrectly!!!

5. Paraphrase • Remember the definition of paraphrase • You cannot discuss diction when you paraphrase! • Why? Because in your evidence you have not given the author’s words! • You really cannot discuss syntax either because you are not giving the author’s exact sentence structure in your evidence.

6. Lit features that work with paraphrase . . . • Characterization • Irony • Symbolism (if used correctly) • Mood • What else?

7. You can use a “hybrid” • Mostly paraphrase but quote one or two words Additionally, Ayah “hated” Chato at this point. She describes how she was so angry that she only slept beside Chato when she was critically ill.

8. Tie to assertion • Your assertion is YOUR FOCUS for your entire paragraph. • You must relate everything to it. • Think about ways you can do this: • Use “echo words.” • These are synonyms for important word(s) in your assertion.
