Fundamental Mission • To learn how to integrate: • Web, social, and mobile media • Advanced pedagogy • Real time, personalized energy data to produce sustained, positive changes in energy behavior. • Our incrementally broadening constituency: • Students at UH (2011) • Citizens of Hawaii • Anyone, anywhere
Initial goals • Education • Improve "energy literacy" of participants • Research • Create innovative, open source software for energy-related behavioral change. • Provide scientific, replicable data regarding technology and approach. • Energy • Produce sustained reduction in energy consumption among participants.
Initial approach: The Kukui Cup • Three weeks of energy-related games, activities, and educational events in October. • For 1000 first year students at UH. • Partially funded by a three year grant from the National Science Foundation.

Kukui Cup and Gamification • Kukui Cup is a "serious game". • Game mechanics: • Point system • Badges • Scoreboards • Progressive complexity • Real time data on energy & power • Quests
Kukui Cup and HCEI • The Kukui Cup supports the goals of the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative • Participants learn how to reduce demand. • Participants become more aware of need to reduce oil dependency. • Kukui Cup winners == Good Energy Citizens!
