A proposal for Straw detector FE monitoring system S.Sergeev, JINR, Dubna
NB • This is just an example of what could be done • Could be extended to needs of any NA62 sub-detector requiring a lot of analog measurements • Does not replace PVSS-based software which is needed in any case
Straw tracker requirements • Detector contains 16*28=448 FE boards located at 4 chambers having 4 views each. • For each board the DCS should monitor • 2 voltages (2.5 and 3.3 V) with accuracy ~1% • 1 current (~1A) with accuracy ~1% • 1 temperature with accuracy ~0.5C • In total 1344 channel of voltage/current measurement and 448 temperature measurement channels. • Desired refresh period ~ 1sec (archiving period much longer)
DCS electronics • We propose to use • Silabs microcontrollers for voltage/current readout and • Maxim (Dallas Semiconductor) 1-wire bus based thermo-sensors for temperature measurement • Using of Ethernet for communications chamber-DCS PC and SPI or I2C inside the chamber electronics • DCS data polling at FE level • Advantages • Very cheap (<20 CHF per FE board) • Based on industrial equipment • Could be accessed by any WEB browser • Drawback • Development of quite simple DIM-server (all in hands, supported by CERN) or bit more complicated OPC server (industrial toolkit) for interfacing to PVSS

Component costs • Thermo-sensor with digital interface~ 2CHF DS18B20 High-Precision 1-Wire Digital Thermometer • Interface MPU C8051F340 <10 CHF • ADC MPU C8051F501 <6 CHF • OP amp + resistors <4 CHF • PCB ~6 CHF/dm2 • Cat5 cable ~1 CHF/m • RJ45 connector ~1 CHF • Ethernet switch DGS-1008D, 8 port 76CHF COGESTRA-LASER SA. 2, Route du Mandement 144, 1242 Satigny • CBL-RJ45-44005 Networking cable, 5m 12 CHF COGESTRA-LASER SA. 2, Route du Mandement 144, 1242 Satigny
View units costs • Ethernet interface Silabs CP2201-EK (industrial version) ~30CHF or home-made version (only required components) ~25CHF • 3 LV distribution mezzanine boards (LVMB) 1 sq.dm with C8051F501, op amps, resistors ~100*3=300 CHF • Ethernet 5 m patch cable 12 CHF In total ~350 CHF • LV distribution mother board – a part of infrastructure (not a DCS) , the cost is not clear
Chamber units costs • View electronics 350 CHF * 4 1400 CHF • 8-port Ethernet switch 76 CHF • Ethernet patch-cord to LV power supply 12 CHF • Cat 5 cable chamber->counting room ~100 CHF In total ~1600 CHF Total cost • 4 chambers 4*1600 6400 CHF • Main 8-port Ethernet switch 76 CHF • Extra PC Ethernet adapter (if needed) DGE-528T 27CHF • Spares (10%) • Two Ethernet interface board 30*2 60 CHF • Five 3 LV distribution mezzanine boards (LVMB) 5*100= 500 CHF • One Ethernet switch 76 CHF In total <8000 CHF
Labor + startup cost • Development of DIM server ~3 FTE man-months (Dubna) • Development of WEB server + other interface software + debugging software ~3 FTE man-months (Dubna) • Development of LV mezzanine board software ~2 FTE man-months (Dubna) • Assembling and debugging at CERN ~ 2 man-months • Startup cost including development kits, compiler license etc. ~3000$
Maintenance • As shows the experience, the DIM server does not need any support. Update of DIM version is done just by replacement of .dll files in corresponding directory • Replacement of Ethernet interface unit requires modification of IP address in a server – could be done in a setup GUI or in a configuration file • Replacement of LV distribution mezzanine board does not require any adjustment. ADC calibration should be done during board manufacturing
Conclusion • Modern and quite cheap • Could be adapted to needs of any NA62 sub-detector
