MBTC 2023: Impact of Wireless Data Systems on the Transportation Systems of the Future Investigators: Scott Mason, Ph.D. Erhan Kutanoglu, Ph.D. Research Scholar: Ghazi M. Magableh
Motivation • Wireless data systems (WDS) have allowed personal and business consumers to become better connected. • Currently, WDS are being used • To establish the location of trailers in the fleet • For simple messaging between companies and their drivers • “Where are you?” • “Call as soon as you are empty.”
Benefits of Wireless Data Systems • Replace paperwork • Reduce the routine work • Easy to use and maintain • Real-time updates of the information • Provide up-to-date data for the company, drivers, and customers
Why Wireless Data Systems? • Flexibility: the ability to reschedule route, time, and destination while the truck is on the road • Ability to track the load on the road, both its position and expected delivery time • Reduce the total cost • Lessen driver confusion and distraction from the road • Improved safety and reduced accidents • Improved security
Research Objective • We will assess the potential for wireless data systems to • Promote more efficient operations • Generate increased profits • Demonstrate improved connectivity throughout and across carrier fleets
Potential Research Benefits • Uncover the potential for wireless data systems to promote more efficient operations, generate increased profits, and demonstrate improved connectivity throughout the fleet • Demonstrate the link between wireless data systems and improved customer service levels and reduced operating costs • Show the potential for WDS to improve customer service, reduce empty miles, and increase utilization
