Discovery Room Special Relationships • S.A.G.A.N. • a grassroots group of inter-disciplinary scientists looking to mentor non-scientists, including teachers & kids, started at ASU • Jan – May 2013: C.A.R.L. S.A.G.A.N. Science Fair • 7 Families – 7 “Astrobiologists” – 7 Projects • How do planets form • How do dolphins communicate • What is best design for a paper airplane? • Paper accepted to the annual Mentoring Conference at Univ NM Oct 2013 - could we be next?

  13. Discovery Room Special Relationships • S.A.G.A.N. – I-TEACH • Scientist – Teacher relationship goal: to cooperatively craft a short lesson that demonstrates a scientific principal, concept or relationship, and publish it on th SAGAN website, making it available to other scientists and teachers in the future.   • Role of mentor scientist • Help with brainstorming a topic and matching activity • Quality checking the lesson plan for accuracy of content, process and scientific conclusions • Reaching the full potential of the lesson in terms of the scientific principals involved, relevant vocabulary, and how the activity might relate to a kid’s everyday experiences • Role of I-TEACH candidate: feedback • Differentiation by grade levels • Ties to the Kyrene curriculum • Teaching strategies used that weren't initially anticipated.

  14. Discovery Room Special Relationships • S.A.G.A.N. – I-TEACH Logistics • Accept SAGAN and then I-TEACH on SAGAN invites • Get Matched to a Mentor • 3 Contacts over 3-4 weeks (minimum) • Initial Videocon • Meet and Greet • Brainstorm and Plan • Email lesson plan to Science Mentor (at least 1 week before you teach - hopefully a week and half) • Receive feedback and modify • Teach Lesson • Final Videocon or SAGAN Discussion Board with Feeback for Mentor

  15. Discovery RoomStudent Expectations • Students “sign their face” & drop passes into plastic bin at attendance table as they enter. • Students remain with the room unless bathroom or nurse is needed • Use restrooms in classroom across the hall. • K-2 students should go with a DR volunteer. 3-5 can go by themselves but a volunteer should “keep and eye out.” • Classroom (as opposed to playground) behavior is expected • Indoor voices • No running, throwing, etc. • Respect other people and their work • Students can use anything out in the open. • Items in cubbies, cabinets, drawers or under the tables are off limits. EXCEPTION: Top “critter” drawers by microscopes OK) • Only 4-6 people at a station at one time. Adults will help them rotate • All room contents remain with the room. EXCEPTION: Invention bin recyclables and scientist cards. • Students are expected to clean up (the last 2-5 minutes)
