Join this interactive activity to learn about qualitative and quantitative observations, and discover the dissimilarities between a hypothesis and a guess. Bring a notebook and engage in hands-on learning!
E N D
Walk-In • Don’t touch the item on your table. • Take out notebook • At the back of notebook, answerthe question: • Is there a difference between a hypothesis and a guess? Explain!
Possible Answers • A hypothesis is an educated guess, based on prior knowledge and on a prediction of what could reasonably happen. • A guess is just an idea that could not be based in reality at all, or is a lucky thought, or even a wild attempt at a prediction (a “wild guess”).
Two Kinds of Observations • Qualitative • Made with the five senses (usually only use four, since it’s not safe to taste!) • Recorded using words, for things like color, shape, features and how it feels. • State facts, not opinions. • Root word: quality (info about)
Quantitative • Made using measurements. • Include a NUMBER and a UNIT, like a pencil is 4 inches long. • Can be repeated by someone else. • Root word: quantity (amount)
Memory Trick! • What memory tricks can you come up to tell the difference between these two words? • Here’s one: Quantitative has the letter N in it, like N for Numbers!
TODAY’S ACTIVITY • Each table has an object on it, and a measuring tool.. • You and your partner will visit each table, with your notebook and the chart we will prepare. • In your chart, record the name of the object, make a quick sketch, and record AT LEAST 2 QUALITATIVE and 2 QUANTITATIVE observations. Move to the next table when instructed! Remember: QUALitative = use words and five senses QUANtitative = measure or count, use numbers.
SET UP THIS CHART IN YOUR NOTEBOOKon your next blank page. (Use the whole page.) • Name of Sketch Qualitative Quantitative • object observations observations • (WORDS) (NUMBERS) • 2 FOR EACH OBJECT 2 FOR EACH OBJECT
Wrap Up • What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative observations? • Which kind are easier to make, or does it matter? • How did we do on following directions? • What did you and your partner do to work well together?
