The Challenge District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
District Membership April 2007
What Challenge? To ensure the survival of the largest voluntary service organisation in the world To reverse the trend of falling membership To keep RIBI and its benefits District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
How? District Governors challenge is for each club to attract 4 new members per club This will reverse the trend It will ensure our membership numbers meet the RI criteria for RIBI to continue It will strengthen our clubs District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Meeting The Challenge District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
This is the Real Challenge How to achieve the target of 4 new members per club or 232 new members throughout the District District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Why such numbers? • In a bad year that number may only enable a club to stand still • Rotary needs to grow for the sake of the community it serves • Objectively we are a service organisation • Our communities need Rotary to be effective • There are many worthy causes for us to tackle • We are pillars of the community District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Find a way • Time for a re-think!! • Some clubs can adapt to change • Some clubs cannot contemplate change • But we can all find ways of developing Rotary in the community as a means to increasing membership District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Why me? The SVP’s here today will want to preside over a successful club when the time comes Some responsibility lies with you You are in a position to set the membership development agenda You can encourage and influence the members You can establish initiatives for the future District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
What is a successful club? Effective Clubs Implement successful service projects Sustain and grow membership Support the Rotary Foundation Develop club leaders Efficient Club administration Four avenues of service District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Where do you start? Right now – whilst your thoughts are fresh Formulate a strategy Take the easy route District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Don’t go it alone The District’s aim is :- To stimulate your thoughts To give you practical ideas To be on hand to assist and advise We will even work with clubs on an individual basis District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
The basic options RETENTION EXTENSION RECRUITMENT MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Retention Hold on to your existing members Involve everyone in the club – we are a service organisation not a lunch club Give newer members an opportunity to take active and significant roles Make the members feel wanted and useful Allow the club to thrive on enthusiasm District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Retention An effective club is an attractive club Good venue for meetings A varied and interesting speaker programme Active committees Social opportunities An inclusive club (gender, age, creed etc.) Mentoring for new members District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment Traditional methods:- Work colleagues Friends Family Neighbours Local business people Speakers District 1220 Membership Services April 2007

Alumni District will be promoting: Reunion events Ways of getting prospects involved in club activities District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment through Community Service • We are a service organisation • Clubs that are actively involved in local projects will be better connected to the community and better equipped to attract members • 2 years of investigation into struggling clubs has established the lack of local projects to be a cause of disconnection with the community District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment through Foundation GSE Team Members Ambassadorial Scholars Colleagues and friends of the above District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment through International Service Identify prospective members from: International fundraising events Filling Aquaboxes Schools Local businesses Churches Community Groups District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment – New Ideas Community projects Identify prospective members – often service minded people Invite them to help with other Rotary projects Invite them to interesting club nights and social activities Make someone responsible for monitoring prospects District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment – The Key Identify prospective members Make someone responsible for keeping a log and sending invites (SVP or Membership Officer) Regularly revue the prospect list (Council meeting) Make them feel increasingly part of your club Ultimately make sure someone invites them to join District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Recruitment – The Soft Sell Get members to fill in a contact list Chiropractor, plumber, kitchen fitter, etc. Hand write invites to a suitable event – ideally one where young people will feel comfortable Engage them in general conversation Encourage them to other events Ease them into Rotary District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Club Analysis • How inviting is your club • Publicity – promoting Rotary • Community projects • Recruitment programme • Identifying and monitoring prospects • Use the “Planning Guide for an Effective Club” to help assess your club (on CD) District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Extension Introducing Alan Hepworth District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
Open up Rotary • Tap into like minded people • There are many voluntary groups fighting for change in our communities whilst fighting for their own survival • There are many young people eager to make the world a better place for themselves and their children • Consider what opportunities Rotary can offer them District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
There is no quick fix If we can attempt to meet the DG’s challenge then we are on the right road Clubs that do not change will inevitably die Extension offers an opportunity to start clubs with young members – a new generation of Rotarians Clubs that do change are sure to thrive District 1220 Membership Services April 2007
