Olympic Games • Olympic games were held to honor the god Zeus. • In ancient Greece, at the beginning of the Olympic games, they would light the altar of Zeus. • At the beginning of the modern Olympic games, they light the Olympic flame • Many countries had sport competitions • But, the Greek Olympics are one of the few that still happen today.

Olympics • The Olympic games feature 2,600 athletes but only a few hundreds play. • Only men can compete in the Olympics. • In the long jump you have to carry weights • If you start the event before the trumpet was played you will be disqualified. • There were no events In winter because it was too cold to compete.
Continue…..Olympics • The modern Olympics have winter competitions. • The Olympic games in Greece were held every four years. • The modern Olympics also happen every 4 years. • The Olympic games were always held in Olympia. • Some of the events were: • Boxing • Chariot racing • Riding • Discus • Javelin • Jump • Wrestling
Young People Olympics • Only men were allowed to enter the Olympics. • However, boys played some games like field hockey. (picture below) • Boys usually played naked so girls couldn’t watch • Girls played some activities like juggling • Spartan girls exercised with no clothes, while Athenian girls exercised with clothes like this one

Sports withoutGreek contribution • Many sports’ roots came from the Greeks • Without their contributions, our sports would be undeveloped. • Hockey, wrestling, foot racing, Boxing, Chariot racing, Riding,Discus,Javelin,Jumping, and Wrestling wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the Greeks. • We would have under developed sports and no world competitions like the Olympic games
Panathenaic Games • Panathenaic games are only for Athens. • It is held to honor the goddess Athena. • The best part of the festival is the parade. • Some of the events are horse and chariot races. • Men run in heavy armor was funny to watch because they get tired fast.
Continue….. • Boxing and wrestling were very dangerous because in the boxing event you can only win by killing the other person • There was an event called the pancratiumwhere men were allowed to punch, kick, and even choke each other. • In order to win in the pancratium, you must make the other fighter surrender, lose consciousness, or die.
Conclusion • As you can see, Greeks played a major role in developing sports • The modern sports-including Olympics-wouldn’t be like it is today if it wasn’t for the contribution of the Greeks. • In our daily lives, almost everything has a trace of Greek Contributions: medicine, art, sports, theatre, and many more….
