SCROLLA Cliff Beevers (Heriot Watt) Jane Paterson (Heriot Watt) Rory Ewins (Edinburgh) Jeff Haywood (Edinburgh) Rachel Harris (Glasgow) Erica McAteer (Glasgow) www.scrolla.ac.uk SCROLLA May 7th 2002
Purpose of the seminar… • To share visions of where we wish our educational sectors to be in 5 years with respect to ICT in learning & teaching (e-learning) • To devise practical measures to record progress towards these goals SCROLLA May 7th 2002
Some drivers which promote greater use of ICT in education: • Government initiatives and programmes • Employers’ needs • Corporate sales drives • Personal ownership and interest • Teachers’ wishes to be ‘up-to-date’ & to enhance quality SCROLLA May 7th 2002
Action at level of government because… • support/develop of knowledge economy, e-society, global competitiveness (of industry & education) • concern over digital divides - equity • cannot be seen not to be active – eg European Union goals ‘Easiest’ targets are infrastructure – PCs, networks, ‘content’ SCROLLA May 7th 2002
Action at level of institution because….. • No choice!!! Cannot run against government targets • Enhanced employability (ICT skills) • Improved effectiveness (quality enhancement) • Improved efficiency (‘more with less’) ‘Easiest’ targets are infrastructure – PCs, networks SCROLLA May 7th 2002
To pursue sensible policies & strategies in support of e-learning We need to know…. • Where are we now? • Where are we trying to get to? • How do we know whether we are making progress? SCROLLA May 7th 2002
Your tasks for the next 90 mins: For ICT in learning & teaching (ie e-learning) in your sector (schools, FE, HE) agree… • definition(s) of where you would wish to be in 5 or so years time (or longer if possible) – target(s) • definition of ‘measures’ which can adequately describe the current state-of-play and could be used to track progress towards your target(s) – monitoring Your major discussion points will be collected and the scrolla team plus session chairs will produce a verbal ‘compare & contrast’ session after lunch SCROLLA May 7th 2002
