  1. SPIRITUAL GROWTH OVERVIEW Three Choices that Lead to Change Joe Harvey Spiritual Development Minister LifeBridge Christian Church 2003

  2. Defining Spiritual Growth • Joining the Journey • Creating Anchoring Points • Content of Faith • Context of Faith • Living Faith (more than the sum of the anchoring points)

  3. Two Dimensions of Growth • Your Choice • God’s Support

  4. Growth Principle Spiritual growth is a joint venture with both God and I each doing our part. Divine Concurrence

  5. Your First Choice: Train “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” -1 Timothy 4:7-8

  6. Training for Godliness • Train Yourself (take responsibility) • Spiritual Growth is Your Job • Churches Create Opportunities • In godliness (proper respect to God) • For lasting results (as opposed to gumnasia “physical exercise”)

  7. 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

  8. Like a Runner and a Boxer • Get involved in strict training • Don’t run aimlessly • Identify the finish line • Know the course • Don’t be a shadow boxer • Recognize the fight • Make every punch count

  9. Intentionality & Alignment • Training is about internationality and alignment. It refers to our decision to align our attitudes and actions with the priorities of God in order for him to work effectively with and through us.

  10. Training Schedule • Your Workout Schedule should include… • Worshipping (corporate & personal) • Learning • Serving • Sharing • Connecting

  11. Your Second Choice: Transform “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conformany longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformedby the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approvewhat God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.” -Romans 12:1-2

  12. Prepare for Change • Romans 12:1,2 • Everything must go! • Understand the pressure points. • It’s time to morph. Law of Emptiness

  13. Growth Principle You’ll know better as you grow!

  14. Tools for Transformation • God’s Tools for Your Transformation • Word • Directive • Reflective • Spirit • Renewal • Internal support • People (external support)

  15. Tools for Transformation • God’s Tools for Your Transformation • Praise (gratitude) • Prayer (dependence) • Purpose

  16. Growth Principle It’s not knowing the truth that transforms our lives, it’s living it!

  17. Your Third Choice: Trust “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.” - 1 Corinthians 3:6-9

  18. God Produces the Growth • Spiritual Growth Begins with God • His means • His message • Spiritual Growth Proceeds from God (knowing the unknown) • Spiritual Growth is the Intention of God • Productive Fields • Stable Structures

  19. Trusting God’s Timing • Follow God’s Lead (Exodus 3:3-4)! • Understand God’s Will • God Determines • God Desires • God Allows • Accept God’s Timing (Habakkuk 2:4)

  20. Growth Principle You’ve got to learn to simply step aside!

  21. Choices that Lead to Change: TRAIN TRANSFORM TRUST
