  1. Refocus the WGs? • Flush out/expand the “Solution” matrix below. Decide if to organize WG’s around Functions, Topics or Solutions – each has pros and a cons. • I’m leaning towards organizing around Functions because these map to identifiable end-users and align with the reference architecture. • Fosters a “system” view • WG would need to consider all topics and solutions. • Current WGs are organized around Topics (sort-of). Activities focus on solutions or individual interests. Topics Functions Send comments via email to: ross.bagwell@nasa.gov Earth Science Data and Information System Project

  2. Put the ‘W’ back into ESDWG ESDWG needs to to identify its customer and purpose. Customer : NASA Data Systems (aka, EOSDIS) Purpose : to perform trade-studies and make recommendations on SPECIFIC system-of-systems problems related to NASA’s data systems. Should NOT be a grassroot organization or blue-sky research (push this into ESIP?). Specific problems (or grand challenges) could be posed by UWGs, data centers, NASA centers, SIPS, flight projects, ESIP, HQ. The priority items should be set by ESIP. The assigned working group should study the problem, formulate solutions (might involve creating prototypes) and report back with proposed solutions (at yearly meeting and white papers).
