Genetics review 6.4
Heredity • Inheriting traits from our parents • Homozygous Dominant: same dominant alleles (AA) • Homozygous recessive: same recessive alleles (aa) • Heteroygous: two different alleles, one dominant and one recessive (Aa)
Alleles & Genes • Alleles are the alternate forms of a gene • They are expressed as upper case or lower case letters in the genotypes: A or a • Genotypes are the genetic make up or the arrangement of the genes (letters) • Phenotypes are the physical characteristics displayed (what we see)
Punnett squares • It is a way to display the possible offspring genotypes and phenotypes • Useful for predicting the genotypes/phenotyes • Monohybrid punnett squares: a cross involving one trait • Dihybridpunnett squares: a cross involving two different traits
