Rare and Endangered plants of the Okavango Delta Ramsar SiteSummary of work carried out by RBG Kew and Ecosurv Environmental Consultants for the ODMP Project, 2006Presentation byBirgitta FarringtonMillennium Seed Bank Project, BotswanaforOkavango Biodiversity Freshwater Expers meeting, Maun, 24-27 2007
PROJECT BACKGROUND • Commissioned by DFRR through the ODMP Project • Duration: 6 Months (April – September 2006) • Limited budget (210 man days) • Approach – historical records, build on MSB experiences + ground- truthing • Conservation assessments with help of GIS
PROJECT OUTPUTS • 20 plant species in need of conservation measures identified (RDL status) • 20 Species Action Plans • Low cost Monitoring Scheme • Delta Habitat classification scheme
PROJECT OUTPUTS CONTD. • Identification guide (Target, monitor, identify) • Seminar to train monitors
CONSERVATION ASSESSMENTS BASED ON IUCN CRITERIA A) Reduction in population size B) Restricted geographic range C) Restricted population size plus decline D) Very restricted population size or area of occupancy E) Quantitative analysis (modelling)
SOURCES OF INFORMATION • Databased specimens (K, GAB, PSUB) • Internet/literature searches • Field work • Expert opinion • GIS
INFORMATION DERIVED FROM GIS WORK • Distribution information: • Extent of Occurrence • Area of Occupancy • Subpopulations • Fragmentation • Locations • Extent and quality of habitat • Protected Areas • Elevation models • Human Footprint • Global Land Cover Characterization (habitats)
RDL SPECIES *Difficulty in calculating AOO prevents the use of these criteria as part of cirterion B, with which the species could possibly be catagorised as critically endangered
SPECIES OF SPECIAL WETLAND INTEREST • Habenaria pasmithii (1984)EN (Ext) • Zeuxine africana (1983) CREN • Eulophia angolensis (1983) EN
OTHER SPECIES OF MONITORING INTEREST • Acacia hebeclada subsp. chobiensisVU • Aldrovanda vesiculosa VU • Eulophia latilabris LC • Pycreus okavangensisLC • Eleocharis cubangensisDD • Eragrostis leptotricha (1981) DD • Eragrostis subglandulosa (1982) VU • Erlangea remifolia VU
As the Okavango Delta is very flat - Orthophotos can help determining habitat features which are not obivious on the ground
WHY Geomorphological / hydrogeological terrain classification ? • Means of adequately and consistently describing the context (habitat) • Tolerance limits of the species can be recognized • Adaptation of management/conservation measures if habitat evolving beyond tolerance levels • Prediction of new populations
Proposed RDL Monitoring Framework for ODRS – Institutional Setup
KEY RECOMMENDATIONS • Continued plant surveys in the ODRS • Implementation of Species Action Plans • Continued assessment and monitoring of RDL plant populations • Seed banking • Ex situ propagation • Re-introduction, translocation and restoration
