Acids and Bases 8th gr. Chemistry
Acids • Forms hydronium ions H3O+ when reacting with water • Sour taste • Corrosive • Conducts electricity • Can cause severe burns or tissue damage • Turns litmus paper red • pH of 0-6.9
Common Acids • HCl- hydrochloric acid can befound in your stomach • Ascorbic acid- aka vitamin C • Vinegar • Citrus fruits • Soda
Bases • Produce OH- ions (Hydroxide ions) • Bitter taste • Slippery • Many are crystalline solids • Turn litmus paper blue • pH 7.1-14 • Corrosive • Conduct electricity • Can cause severe burns or tissue damage
Common Bases • Soaps and detergents • Baking soda • Ammonia • Magnesium hydroxide aka Milk of Magnesia • Fertilizer • Drain cleaner/bleach • Tums or other antacids
Indicator- a substance that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base. • Ex: Litmus paper • pH paper • Phenolthalein • Phenol Red • Cabbage juice
