Characteristics of The Novel This Spanish written novel with a setting in Spain explains the story of prohibited love, and illustrates the imagery that clarify the protagonists emotions and everything/everyone that surrounds her. Protagonist: Doña Inés- An aristocratic and educated woman who falls in love with a prohibited man Other important characters Diego: Young poet who is Doña Ines’ prohibited love Uncle Pablo: Reveals the past love story of Doña Beatriz which parallels with Doña Inés’ love story Doña Beatriz: The woman whose love story uncle Pablo is writing about

  4. Spatial Techniques The Spatial techniques take the novel out of the a temporal context and into a spatial context. Spatial Context Emotional Context Intense emotions of the Protagonists The spatial techniques undermine the progression of time because time in this story is not unique. It is repeated.

  8. Timeless Space Concept The “space” that is filled with the imagery that makes the illusion that the stops, which undermines the expression of cyclical aspect that creates this timeless space.

  12. In Conclusion The evolvement of the time in this novel is thoroughly hidden through this created “space” that is filled with the imagery portrayed by Azorín through this cyclical story of love that explains the protagonists and her life story.
