3. Two Major Problems
4. Oil Additives Additives commonly used in lubricating oils
Oxidation Inhibitors
Corrosion Inhibitors
Rust Inhibitors
Friction Modifying Additives
Pour Point Depressants
Detergents
Dispersants
Foam Inhibitors
5. Carbon Deposits During normal operation, the engine generates a lot of Ultrafine Particles (UFPs) which have a diameter smaller than 100 nm.
UFPs are mostly carbon-rich.
6. Dispersants
7. Bis Polyisobutylene Succinimide (PIBSI)
8. Polyamines used to Synthesize PIBSI
9. Micelles Micelles are aggregates of dispersants in the solvent.
Depending on the different solvents used, the dispersants form micelles or reverse micelles.
Two Important parameters: Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) and Aggregation Number (N agg).
10. Micelles
11. Results
12. Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) CMC is the concentration when dispersants begin to form micelles.
The CMC is measured with the ruthenium complex (RuNH2) which probes the dispersant micelles at the molecular level by fluorescence.
13. CMC for PIBSIs in Hexane
14. Aggregation Number (Nagg) Nagg is a measure of the size of the dispersant micelles.
Turro and Yekta procedures1 are used to determine Nagg.
KI is added as a quencher.
15. Aggregation Number of PIBSI Dispersants
16. Adsorption onto Carbon Black Particles (CBPs)
17. Adsorption Isotherm ?: The amount of adsorbed dispersant at equilibrium.
18. Langmuir Isotherm Langmuir isotherm is used to model the adsorption of molecules on a solid surface.
19. 1/G vs. 1/Ceq
20. Adsorption & Micellization The change in binding regime is observed for PIB-TEPA and PIB-PEHA when Ccbr is close to CMC.
It suggested that micellization impedes binding of the succinimide dispersants to the CBPs.
21. Future Work Characterize the micellization and adsorption of dispersants, and investigate the relationship between micellization and adsorption.
