What is software? Software consists of computer programs and data files that work together to provide a computer with the instructions and data necessary for carrying out a task. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Software Software is categorized as: • Application Software Is a set of one or more computer programs that help a person carry out a task. • System Software Is designed to help the computer carry out the basic operating functions. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Application Software • Application software is used for a variety of reasons. • As a business tool. • To assist with graphics and multimedia projects. • To support home, personal and education activities. • To facilitate communication. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007

System Software • Operating System A set of programs containing instructions that coordinate all the activities among computer hardware resources. • It runs application program. • It provides interface between user and the computer • It transfers data among input and output devices and memory. User Interface Is a combination of hardware and software that help people and computers to communicate and control the computer. • Command User Interface: require user to type memorized commands to run programs and accomplish tasks. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
User Interface • Graphical User Interface (GUI) Provides a way to point and click a mouse to select menu options and manipulate graphical objects displayed on the screen. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Word Processing • Word processor allows user to create and manipulate documents mostly containing texts and sometimes graphics. • It assists the user in producing documents, such as reports, letters, papers and manuscripts. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Word Processing Features • Clip Art: a collection of drawings, diagrams, maps and photographs that you can insert in your document. • Wordwrap: allows the user to type words in a paragraph continually without pressing ENTER key at the end of each line. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Word Processing Features • Scrolling: is the process of moving different portions of the document on the screen to view. • Search: allows you to locate all occurrences or a certain character, word or phase. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
Word Processing Features • Replace: in combination with the search feature allows you to substitute existing characters/words with new one. • Spelling checker: reviews the spelling of individual words, sections of a document or the entire document. Lecture 2, Term 3 - 2007
